  • Chippewa end looks to be seen    Daniel Bazuin's story could have had a Kentucky backdrop. He's the farm boy made good. He's the small-town kid with big-time dreams. Heck, he even led his high school to a state basketball championship. But Bazuin grew up in McBain, Mich., and football is at the heart of his back-story.
  • Fans prefer tough teams to easy wins    UK DRAWS BIGGER CROWDS WITH BIG-NAME SEC OPPONENTS    Two weeks back, Rich Brooks was asked about the empty seats at Commonwealth Stadium. • Cats want fans more involved    TEAM WANTS GAMES TO BE MORE THAN 'A SOCIAL EVENT'    Rich Brooks and the Kentucky players are asking for a little home cookin' for tonight's pivotal game against Central Michigan. The Wildcats haven't started 4-0 at home since 1987.

  • CMU wants in on fun    CHIPPEWAS HOPE TO JOIN MAC RIVALS IN MAKING AN IMPACT    It's not as if the Mid-American Conference has anything to prove to the football nation. • UK's run defense still poor    This was supposed to be the season when Kentucky could finally stop the run.
  • Offense must drive Wildcats rest of the way    There's blue smoke in the air above Commonwealth Stadium. • UK's O-Line Features Two Newcomers    At center, a former 180-pound high school fullback who had never snapped a ball in a game until a week ago. The Cats are on schedule, 2-2 after four games, 1-1 in the SEC. They lost the two (Louisville and Florida) they were supposed to lose. They won the two (Texas State and Ole Miss) they needed to win. They were overmatched at Louisville in their first clash with a titan, then surprisingly scrappy Saturday against Florida in the sweaty "Swamp."
  • Cats earn better reviews in Florida    BROOKS SEES BRIGHT SPOTS IN SECOND NATIONAL TV GAME    The Kentucky football team's season premiere on national television last month was a dud, as the Cats were whitewashed 59-28 by Louisville.

But it's for that reason that I thought my first "inside" impressions of UK basketball might be worth writing.

Alone on an island in man-to-man coverage, UK's Booker gave up a 47-yard completion to Rebels receiver Mike Wallace. That prompted Ole Miss to continue to go at Booker. Quarterback Brent Schaeffer hooked up with Wallace again on a deep ball in the third quarter that was ruled a touchdown (replays indicated that Wallace was out of bounds), only to be negated because of an ineligible receiver downfield.
  • Cats hope not to be running on empty    Injuries, Gators pose challenges    The star tailback is hobbling. The offensive line might get more tweaking. • Video killed the football star    Perhaps nothing embodies the generation gap in the UK football camp as much as video-game consoles. The coaching staff doesn't grasp the appeal. One day last spring, offensive coordinator Joker Phillips took wide receiver Dicky Lyons Jr. to task in the media. Lyons' response: "Coach, it didn't bother me that you got after me. I just think it's going to hurt my ratings on the Madden (video game). "

  • Rebs' offense aims to shake doldrums    It was embarrassing and ugly. It was disappointing. Humiliating. Awful. So many colorful words have been used to describe Ole Miss' offense during the 34-7 loss at Missouri last Sunday.

Both young teams open SEC play on Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium desperately needing momentum heading into the teeth of their conference schedule.
  • Kentucky meets its twin    MISSISSIPPI ALSO CAME INTO SEASON EXPECTING MORE    In many ways, Kentucky and Mississippi will be looking in the mirror on Saturday night. The Rebels and Wildcats both came into the season expecting improvement and talking about better talent and increased depth. But both teams already have an embarrassing road loss under their belts, a 59-28 drubbing at Louisville in the season-opener for the Cats and a 34-7 clunker at Missouri last Saturday for the Rebels.
  • Mississippi meets its match with UK    Rebels, Cats have similar talent, goals    You can't convince Mississippi coach Ed Orgeron that his team's visit to the University of Kentucky tomorrow is just another game. But convincing him it's a do-or-die affair is even harder. "I don't believe in must-wins," Orgeron said.
  • SEC a rough road to travel to national title    The Southeastern Conference would have more to say about the business of selecting a national champion if it wasn’t for a minor detail. Those Tigers, Gators, Vols, and Dogs have to play each other. It’s hard to find a day off in the SEC.

  • UK Notebook: Cats' defense much improved    One defensive stop against a Division I-AA team won't prove that the Kentucky defense is going to be better this year. However, it did prove that the Wildcats can play with more determination and emotion than they did in a season-opening loss at Louisville.
  • Goal line stand by Cats set tone for win    An unexpected thunderstorm delayed the contest for 45 minutes and Brooks couldn't help but think back to his debut three years ago against Louisville.

Football

  • READY, ROCK STEADY    Brooks staying calm despite all the pressure    Game week is the time when coaches get wound up the tightest, but Kentucky Coach Rich Brooks has been unusually sedate in most of his interviews leading up to tonight's opener with Louisville.
  • Brohm, Bush aim for fast start    WIN CRUCIAL TO PAIR'S HEISMAN HOPES    Call it a game within a game. Particulary for Louisville, much is riding on its season-opening football game Sunday night against Kentucky: the Cards' hopes for a perfect season and a shot at the national championship, their 12-game home field winning streak, which is third longest in the nation, and their three-game winning streak over UK.
  • Win the game, get Louisville recruits    IN-STATE STARS NEED REASON TO COME TO UK    Kentucky doesn't need to win back the Governor's Cup just to save face, or to save Rich Brooks' job, or to save itself from the raging earache sure to come with a fourth straight loss to the Redbirds up the road.
  • MAN OF THE MOMENT    One win could change everything for Rich Brooks -- plus 20 other things you need to know about tonight    Twenty-one nuggets to toss into the Governor's Cup: 21. Rich Brooks. Could totally change the tone of his entire Kentucky coaching tenure with a victory tonight.
  • Katrina behind him, Mills ready to play    Lamar Mills is counting on a much better Labor Day weekend than the one he had last year. The week of the season opener with Louisville, Mills' family home in Slidell, La., was severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Later that week, with his parents in the stands, he was playing the game of his life before suffering a season-ending knee injury in the fourth quarter.
  • Tamme knows what Louisville game means to UK fans    The stage is bigger, but really not that different from the Danville-Boyle County rivalry games.
  • Improved Cats still can’t beat Louisville    OK, this is where the comments may start to get hostile. But I am fine with it. It is time to pick tonight's "Clash of the Commonwealth."
  • Cats-Cards tidbits    Tidbits of information going into tonight's Kentucky-Louisville game:
  • Michael Bush or Rafael Little?   Based on recent history, a running back will decide who wins After seven years, this trend should be etched in stone somewhere. It should be engraved into the Governor's Cup. It should be read, simultaneously, by radio voices Tom Leach and Paul Rogers at midfield before the annual rivalry game between the University of Louisville and University of Kentucky football teams.
  • Few truths are known about The Game    The only thing I know is that it is time for everybody to prove they were working on more than secrecy behind the closed gates. Here is my list of things to watch tonight. I won't keep it a secret any longer.

  • Wildcats relaxed with Woodson at QB    Even though they've got a tough game coming up, things are a little more relaxed in the Kentucky football camp now that they know who will lead them.
  • Cats' seniors try to avert sweep …    It hit Durrell White last week. As the University of Kentucky's senior defensive end prepared for the season opener against Louisville, it crossed his mind that after Sunday he'll never again get set for a game with the Cardinals.

  • Online walk-on: Coury surfs net to find Cats    FATHER'S INTERNET SEARCH YIELDS INVITATION TO UK    Not satisfied with his scholarship offers, a high school prospect took a year off from the basketball system. He worked to improve his body and his game. He and his father searched the Internet for a higher-level college program that needed help at power forward.
