  • SEC balance of power shift    Bob Dylan may have sung the words 40 years ago without a hint of basketball on his mind, but they certainly apply to what's happened to the balance of power in the Southeastern Conference the last few years, because, "the times they are a changin'.''

  • UK will try to bounce back against Mississippi State    Statistics are not something that Kentucky center Nick Seitze normally pays much attention to before a game.
  • Knockaround Guys    One question stirs up more conversation among University of Kentucky football players than any other. It has nothing to do with who runs the fastest, hits the hardest or lifts the most weight.
  • Kentucky Wildcats Report    Mississippi State's defense hard to predict    University of Kentucky coach Guy Morriss spent a year on the Mississippi State staff coaching alongside defensive coordinator Joe Lee Dunn. But that doesn't mean Morriss has any insight into Dunn's unpredictable defensive scheme, which rushes as many as eight or as few as three.

  • UK a team of halves, halve-nots    Kentucky Coach Guy Morriss might want to start showing his team episodes of 60 Minutes during its Sunday evening film sessions, because so far this season, 60 minutes of consistent play have mostly eluded his Wildcats.
  • With Bulldogs in rear, Wildcats look ahead    With four games left, the University of Kentucky's football season could go any number of ways. The Wildcats could win out, go 9-3 and almost assuredly earn Guy Morriss Coach of the Year honors in the Southeastern Conference.
  • 'Cats ready to bounce back   It's time to tip the hat and turn the page.  That's the way University of Kentucky football coach Guy Morriss is looking at Saturday's 52-24 loss to Georgia, and it's the message he conveyed to his team as it watched film on Sunday.

  • Nothing worked for Cats defense    The more John Goodner watched Georgia's offense produce yards and points, the more frustrated the Kentucky defensive coordinator got.
  • Lorenzen needs breather, not benching    My five cents' worth after a day to mull Georgia's mauling of Kentucky: 1.) All talk about benching Jared Lorenzen is silly. The Kentucky fans who filled the Sunday morning radio talk shows with such demands yesterday have let emotion trample their reason.
  • Morriss not keen on two-QB idea    Two quarterbacks. One an experienced pocket passer who can carve up a defense once he gets in a rhythm, the other a young, athletic signal-caller who can attack defenses with both his feet and his arm.

  • DOG POUNDING    Logic suggested that a Georgia offense minus three key starters leveled the playing field for the Bulldogs' matchup with Kentucky yesterday.
  • Georgia makes sure goalposts not in danger    The goalposts are still standing at Commonwealth Stadium today.  Well, the goalpost in the north end zone did get bumped a little by Georgia's Johnathan Sullivan after the fifth-ranked Bulldogs humbled upset-minded, trash-talking Kentucky on Saturday, 52-24.
  • UK's old problems come home to rout    Darned this homecoming thing. Kentucky took the whole concept to an extreme. At least, someone apparently decided to invite back a porous Mike Major-era defense.
  • dogs cancel party    The goal posts at Commonwealth were still standing, but more important to Georgia's football team, its hopes of winning the SEC championship were still intact after the unbeaten Bulldogs destroyed Kentucky 52-24 yesterday.

  • Barnhart appeals to UK fans    University of Kentucky Coach Guy Morriss and Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart have done their best to make sure there's plenty of home cookin' going on for today's big showdown with No. 5 Georgia.
  • GAMES WITHIN THE GAME    If facing a Kentucky team with nothing to lose on its home field didn't concern Georgia Coach Mark Richt enough, injuries will make his task that much tougher. His top running back (Musa Smith), top deep threat (Fred Gibson) and top offensive lineman (Jon Stinchcomb) are hurting. Smith, who practiced with a cast covering his broken left thumb, is the most likely of the trio to play, but Gibson could be the biggest loss for Georgia. He burned the Cats for two long touchdowns last season and is the...

  • UK defense bends but doesn't break    When UK defensive coordinator John Goodner looks at the stat book, there's only one number that matters. "Do we have less points than the other team?" Goodner said. "That's all I worry about. Yardage and all that stuff doesn't matter to me. As long as we've got a chance to win, I don't care if we're dead last in everything."

  • Dawgs to face UK without 3 starters    The Georgia Bulldogs qualified for a group rate at the hospital on Tuesday.

     Basketball

  • Smith stresses discipline    Tubby Smith put the cart before the horse during his annual Kentucky basketball Media Day news conference yesterday. In talking about the prospects for improved leadership this season, the UK coach did not suggest that a better lead horse, so to speak, made the difference. He noted the value of a better cart. No squeaky wheels make for a smoother ride.
  • Sniper attacks hit home for Cats' Bogans    When Keith Bogans returned from basketball practice early yesterday morning, there was a phone message from his mother. He figured there might be. There have been many the past couple of weeks. Yesterday's message was the same, the news not good. There had been another sniper shooting nearby.
  • Offense gets a tweak, not an overhaul    During a visit to the Lexington Rotary Club last week, Kentucky Coach Tubby Smith talked of changing the offense this season. Smith clarified the earlier comment during Media Day yesterday. Make that tweaking the offense, he said, or fine-tuning the offense.

     Football

  • Close ones didn't get away from Georgia    At first glance, the Georgia and Kentucky football teams may seem worlds apart. The Bulldogs are the nation's No. 5 team, while UK is unranked. Georgia is also one of a handful of teams still in the hunt for a national championship, while the probation-stricken Cats are ineligible for a bowl game.
  • Think about it: UK still has plenty to play for    The NCAA has banned this University of Kentucky football team from bowl games.
  • UK players will rip down goal posts if they top Dawgs    If University of Kentucky football fans intend to tear down the goal posts after Saturday's game against Georgia, they better get a head start.
  • Upset of Georgia on Cats' mind    University of Kentucky football fans may want to be on the lookout Saturday if the Wildcats are able to upset fifth-ranked Georgia on Saturday, because they will likely have junior quarterback Jared Lorenzen there to help them tear down the goalposts, and head coach Guy Morriss may be right alongside him.
  • Boone to have family at game    University of Kentucky senior wide receiver Aaron Boone is excited about having his three sisters and his brother-in-law among the six family members coming to Lexington for Saturday's game against Georgia not just because it's a chance for them to see him in such a big game, but because they'll get a chance to escape the chaos and trouble occurring over the last few weeks in Washington, D.C., because of the "Beltway Sniper."

  • Team play a constant for these Cats    As the Kentucky offense limped through a two-week mini-slump in losses to Florida and South Carolina, Guy Morriss wouldn't single out any individual players or positions, saying UK's struggles were a group effort.
  • Bulldogs will be without Smith, Gibson at Kentucky    The Georgia Bulldogs are still unbeaten. To remain that way, they'll have to get by without two key offensive players, maybe three.

     Football

  • Kentucky vs. Georgia Football Game Picked Up By CBS    This will be UK's fourth national TV appearance of the season.
  • LIVING HIGH OFF HOGS    Kentucky Coach Guy Morriss figured that at some point his football team would have to stop shooting itself in the foot. But after watching key mistakes and mental breakdowns cost the Cats in back-to-back losses to Florida and South Carolina, and after watching those same kinds of blunders contribute to a 10-9 halftime deficit at Arkansas yesterday, he had to wonder.
  • Great week of practice leads to a great win    By Tuesday, they knew they would win. They had suffered a most difficult defeat three days before. Their big-boned quarterback was taking big-time criticism. They were traveling to play a team that had just pounded a division rival by three touchdowns. Their bandwagon was losing speed and passengers.
  • BY THE NUMBERS    Kentucky 3 6 20 0--29 Arkansas 7 3 7 0--17 First quarter Taylor Begley 49 field goal, 3:24; ARK -- Mark Pierce 34 run (David Carlton kick), 7:49.

  • Taste of winning spurs on Wildcats    The Wildcat players admit they've heard the "same ol' Kentucky" whispers after they dropped a 16-12 decision to South Carolina in perhaps the season's pivotal game.
  • DEPTH CHARTS    Kentucky offense Left tackle 61 Matt Huff 6-5 304 So. 74 Jeremy Darveau 6-8 295 Fr. Left guard 70 Jason Rollins 6-5 275 So. 71 Jared McGowan 6-4 295 Fr.
  • GAME WITHIN THE GAME    Fred Talley has picked up the slack and then some for the injured Cedric Cobbs. Last week he exploded for 241 yards against Auburn. Cobbs is expected to miss his second consecutive game with a bad toe, so Talley will once again be the man for the Arkansas running game. UK tacklers beware: The 5-foot-9, 180-pound Talley is capable of cutting on a dime and can turn a missed tackle into an 80-yard touchdown.
  • Will real Lorenzen please stand up?    In just two weeks, Kentucky quarterback Jared Lorenzen has gone from a poised, improved decision-maker to an overweight standing target in the pocket.
  • UK run defense set for stiff test    In the pass-happy Southeastern Conference, a quarterback makes a name for himself by throwing for 400 yards a game, not putting his head down for an extra 2 yards.

     Volleyball

Just when it appeared this Kentucky football season was ready to stage a revival of that popular Big Blue hit, the Unforgettables, this time with helmets and shoulder pads, the Cats lost one that may be hard to forget last night.
  • Honk if you've seen this UK ending before    Here is the problem with Commonwealth Stadium. It was built in a time warp. We all thought yesterday was Oct. 12, 2002, when we left for the Stadium.
  • House of errors    Rarely does a 10-point halftime lead feel as hollow as the one Kentucky took into the locker room against South Carolina last night.
  • Cats take blame for anemic offense    Lttle things contribute to a loss. The little things caused Kentucky to put up its lowest number of points this season in its 16-12 loss to South Carolina.
  • BY THE NUMBERS    South Carolina 0 0 3 13--16 Kentucky 0 10 0 2--12 Second quarter Tommy Cook 11 pass from Jared Lorenzen (Taylor Begley kick), 3:14; UK -- Begley 40 field goal, 0:13.

  • shooting for the nba    Saul Smith acknowledges his surprise at being considered an NBA prospect. Doesn't that make it unanimous? Smith, the ever-hustling former Kentucky point guard, seldom managed to elude skeptics when he played here. They said that nepotism (of course, his father is UK Coach Tubby Smith) got him on the team. Kinder souls saw him as a heady complementary player.

  • Cats shrug off role as favorites    When was the last time that the Kentucky football team was expected to win a game against a decent team? Considering that UK's last Southeastern Conference win over a team besides Vanderbilt came against Louisiana State on Oct. 16, 1999, and the answer to that question is probably quite a long time.
  • GAMES WITHIN THE GAME    While UK has shown defensive improvement this season, they are still susceptible to the run. The Wildcats give up 157.8 yards a game on the ground, 10th-best in the SEC.
  • Flags a 'huge concern' for Cats    Kentucky Coach Guy Morriss isn't much into statistics, but one number has him hot under the collar. His Wildcats currently lead the Southeastern Conference in penalty yardage per game. UK has been flagged 46 times for 373 yards (74.6 average).
  • Cats want 'to make amends' tonight    University of Kentucky football coach Guy Morriss sat before the media with a numb stare. Inside his head, he replayed long runs and missed tackles, foolish penalties and senseless mistakes, disbelieving what he'd just witnessed.
  •  'Cats look for better effort vs. Gamecocks    The University of Kentucky football team will be out more for atonement than for revenge, but no matter what it uses for motivation, tonight's game against South Carolina will be pivotal to whether the Wildcats can finish the season as strongly as they began it

  • Holtz has reasons to sing blues    The media and opposing coaches pretty much have learned to ignore South Carolina Coach Lou Holtz's woe-is-me attitude concerning his team and program, but this year Holtz might not be totally bluffing.
  • Gamecocks QB finally is living his dream    At age 26, Corey Jenkins has lost more than most people will earn. The former first-round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox was bilked out of his $575,000 signing bonus, his cars were repossessed and the comfortable home he bought for his mother was taken away, all because of thieving agents.

Arkansas would join the newly formed West division. (OK.) South Carolina would enter the East. (Yawn.)

  • 'Let him keep talking'    The phrase has become part of the University of Kentucky's football practice, just like blocking and tackling.
  • S.C. quarterback presents dual threat    South Carolina quarterback Corey Jenkins is utilized as much as a runner as he is a passer, but it's his improvement throwing the ball that perhaps makes him more dangerous to the University of Kentucky than Florida's Rex Grossman, the preseason Heisman Trophy favorite.
