  • Cats need a leader    Perhaps the play that made Kentucky coach Tubby Smith the happiest here Tuesday night was a loose ball scramble
  • Carter happy to be playing    Jared Carter was happy to be back in a Kentucky uniform. Tubby Smith was equally glad to see Carter's presence on the court.
  • Defense discovered    Cats hold Cougars to 20 points in the paint    77 61 Kentucky Charleston A Joe hadn't been off his feet so many times in succession since George Foreman repeatedly pounded Smokin' Joe Frazier to the canvas in Jamaica in 1973.
  • Cats bask a little before tough test at North Carolina    Having yielded 146 points in the paint in the three most recent games, lost two straight games and dropped out of the Top 25, Kentucky wasn't about to shrug off last night's 77-61 victory over Charleston.
  • Bradley exorcises some bad tropical memories    He had waited two years for his chance to shine, and then when it came he got burned. Most people have lovely memories of Maui. Ramel Bradley, not so much.
  • Wildcats ace defensive test    Perhaps the University of Kentucky players had lingering traces of tryptophan, an amino acid found in turkey believed to make you sleepy.
  • Kentucky takes a step in right direction    College of Charleston coach Bobby Cremins has been around the game of basketball for a long, long time. His coaching career spans four decades.
  • UK lets defense make its case      Smith's lessons inspire Wildcats    The classroom was a basketball court and the professor wore Nikes. Other than that, Monday's practice at the University of Kentucky started the way any college class might — with the Wildcats putting pen to paper for a written test on the principles of coach Tubby Smith's defense. "I aced it," point guard Ramel Bradley said last night. "I think most of us did pretty well."

  • Smith stresses defense, says lineup may change    Kentucky coach Tubby Smith said he didn't have to point out how poorly his team played defensively during three games in Maui last week when it gave up 146 points in the paint.
  • Chastened Cats hear defense, defense, defense     UCLA used the same play to score again and again against Kentucky last week. In watching the tape, UK Coach Tubby Smith counted "seven or eight" times the Bruins kept drawing water from the same well.
  • Cats shift focus to defense    Seek improvement against Charleston    Bobby Perry has been lying awake at night. The University of Kentucky forward is plenty bothered by his team's 3-2 start and by the 146 points the Wildcats surrendered in the paint during last week's Maui Invitational tournament. But that's not what's making him restless.
  • Wildcats say they'll make up for Maui    Kentucky lost two games in the EA Sports Maui Invitational. But the Cats say they did not lose their confidence in Hawaii. "We still feel very confident in our potential to be a great team," forward Bobby Perry said. "We're not going to let that get us down."

  • Music City Bowl fits Cats the best    Nothing will be official until Sunday about what bowl game Kentucky will be in, but if you are making travel plans start with Nashville and the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl.
  • Petrino, Brooks, Hoeppner all deserve praise    Baseball asks writers to include 10 names on Most Valuable Player ballots. Give me 10 slots on my Coach of the Year ballot, and I've got three guys I cannot exclude: Bobby Petrino of Louisville, Rich Brooks of Kentucky and Terry Hoeppner of Indiana. They don't deserve the hardware, but they belong in the group picture.

  • UK offensive line overcomes injury problems    Because Kentucky failed to score a touchdown three times when it drove inside the 5-yard line and eventually lost 17-12 to Tennessee, the UK offensive line received little attention for its play Saturday against the Volunteers.
  • Brooks' best move: promoting Phillips    The Mitch-Rich Era of Kentucky football didn't change direction the day the goal posts came down with a win over Georgia, or the day the Cats went toe-to-toe at Tennessee, or even the day the program earned a bowl invitation.
  • Bowl prospects lessen sting of Tennessee loss    IN MANY WAYS, IT'S THE START OF THE CATS' NEW SEASON    The Kentucky locker room was like a funeral parlor following the Wildcats' 17-12 loss at Tennessee on Saturday, and senior defensive end Durrell White picked up on the vibe.

  • UK Hoops Stops Salukis, 78-59    Samantha Mahoney led five Kentucky players in double figures with 17 points and Sarah Elliott registered her second consecutive double-double as the No. 20/24 Wildcats bounced back with a 78-59 win over Southern Illinois

  • KENTUCKY 78, SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 59: Cats bounce back to take third in San Francisco    Samantha Mahoney scored 17 points and Sarah Elliott had 12 points and 11 rebounds in No. 20 Kentucky's 78-59 victory over Southern Illinois in the consolation game of the Odwalla Classic last night.

Men

  • Don't write off the Cats    HISTORY SHOWS THAT LESSONS LEARNED IN HAWAII CAN PAY NCAA DIVIDENDS    When his teams struggled, former Arkansas coach Nolan Richardson was fond of saying, "Not all sickness is death." The basketball problems that lead to losses can be solved, and teams can revive themselves like a phoenix (not the Suns, but the mythological bird that arises from its own ashes to live again).

Football HelmetFootball

  • UK LEFT SINGING RED-ZONE BLUES    Too many points left on the field    The play call was in. Six yards was all that stood between Kentucky and its first victory over Tennessee in 22 years. Andre Woodson rolled hard to his right, then looked back across the field for Jacob Tamme in the end zone.
  • What's next for the Cats?    Kentucky completed its regular season yesterday with a 7-5 record. UK finished third in the Southeastern Conference East at 4-4.
  • Brooks regrets remarks about ex-Cats    Discrediting players not his intent    Kentucky Coach Rich Brooks apologized yesterday after UK's 17-12 loss to Tennessee for earlier comments he made regarding how he thought current UK players such as Keenan Burton, Rafael Little and Wesley Woodyard had not generated as much of a positive response from the public as former Wildcats stars Jared Lorenzen and Derek Abney.
  • At least Cats earned an opportunity to miss    The ruling on the field is once again Kentucky football never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity. Its offense makes five red-zone trips and comes away with but a touchdown and two field goals. Its freshman place-kicker, a hometown boy, misses an extra point and a 33-yard field goal. Its downtrodden defense plays its season's best but can't scoop up the loose ball or make the needed tackle.
  • It hurts because UK was better team    Kentucky was about to drive a stake in The Streak. Twenty-one years of Rocky Top 'til you drop. Twenty-one years of Kentucky and Tennessee playing football games that yielded a result as predictable as the Harlem Globetrotters vs. the Washington Generals.
  • Missed opportunities leave UK with what-ifs    It looked like Kentucky was finally going to end that Big Orange curse.
  • Tamme has best game, but another bitter defeat    The fairy tale ending just won't quite work for Jacob Tamme.
  • Motivated Cats defense played above their ranking    A headline in Saturday's Knoxville News Sentinel predicted that Tennessee would "hang another 50 on Kentucky."
  • Cats can't close deal, fall to Vols    17-12 loss is 22nd straight in series    The play that finally would put the University of Kentucky over Rocky Top was designed to make use of misdirection. Instead, the Wildcats walked an all-too familiar path in their football rivalry with No. 19 Tennessee yesterday.
  • Better team on the wrong side of the score    The team that delivered more cartilage-loosening hits lost. The team with the stronger running and passing games lost. The team that made fewer turnovers lost.
  • Tight end Tamme again at his best against Volunteers    University of Kentucky tight end Jacob Tamme seems to glow against Tennessee orange.
  • No. 19 Tennessee 17, Kentucky 12    LaMarcus Coker plunged 1 yard for a touchdown and No. 19 Tennessee's defense held on to beat Kentucky 17-12 Saturday, the Volunteers' 22nd consecutive victory over the Wildcats.
  • UT defense makes its stand    Tennessee senior defensive tackle Turk McBride couldn't understand why the Vols were unable to stop Kentucky for much of the game.

  • Vols win ugly struggle against Kentucky    Tennessee's 22nd straight victory over Kentucky was a struggle -- which didn't bother Volunteers coach Phillip Fulmer too much.

  • Vols' offense a welcome sight?    ARCHER: DROPBACK QB PLAYS TO UK'S STRENGTH    So let's get this straight: The Kentucky coaches believe that defending Tennessee today might actually be easier than trying to line up against Louisiana-Monroe?
  • Vols tradition: Beat Cats    UK hopes to end 21-year dry spell    With each annual meeting and each subsequent loss, the University of Kentucky football team's last win against Tennessee is beginning to have the historical significance they usually build monuments to remember.

  • Cats' Tamme wants one for the team    Jacob Tamme doesn't need anyone to tell him what it would mean to Kentucky football fans if the Wildcats could win at Tennessee on Saturday.
  • Wildcats need fans' support, not their boos    I am one of Kentucky's biggest fans, partly because I grew up in Kentucky and partly because I spent five years representing the state and university while playing for the University of Kentucky football team.
  • Cats Defense Looks For Better Game Against Vols    Tennessee quarterback Erik Ainge says he's not fooled by Kentucky's defensive statistics.  The Wildcats, who travel to No. 19 Tennessee on Saturday for the teams' regular-season finale, rank last in Division I-A in total defense and gave up 501 yards in last week's 42-40 win over Louisiana-Monroe.
  • Johnson removes chip from shoulder    PHILLIPS' TIRADE HELPED TURN SOPHOMORE AROUND    It was last month, and the University of Kentucky had just finished an indoor practice at the Nutter Field House. Slowly but surely, the facility started to empty out, but a scene was starting to develop on the practice field.
  • Imagine all you want for this game     Imagine if John Lennon had been born a UK man -- not a man from the U.K. Imagine what the world could be like if Kentucky beats Tennessee at football Saturday in Knoxville.
  • Streak stretches 22 years    Kentucky fans rushed onto the field and tore down a goal post to celebrate beating Georgia this season for the first time in nine tries. The Wildcats' losing streak to Tennessee is more than double that.
  • All Brooks needs for Christmas is a history lesson    All right, quit shoving! What would Black Friday be without a shopping list? But be warned, most of these items can't be found at the mall: For University of Kentucky football coach Rich Brooks: some insight into the mindsets of Wildcats football fans.
  • Old team, new foe for Cats QB coach    Sanders dedicated 22 years to Vols    After 22 years as a player and coach at the University of Tennessee, Randy Sanders might know every crevice and nuance of the 107,000-capacity Neyland Stadium.
  • UK Looking To End Streak Against Tennessee    Kentucky fans rushed onto the field and tore down a goal post to celebrate beating Georgia this season for the first time in nine tries. The Wildcats' losing streak to Tennessee is more than double that.

  • A mismatchup: Memphis 80, UK 63    Tigers drive past weary Wildcats    Memphis basketball coach John Calipari has built his Tigers to dash and slash, run the court and break down defenses off the dribble. So in hindsight, maybe the University of Kentucky Wildcats should have seen yesterday's 80-63 loss coming.
  • Cats want more from point guards    After an 80-63 loss to Memphis yesterday in the EA Sports Maui Invitational, Kentucky Coach Tubby Smith acknowledged that his team needs better play at point guard.
  • Morris, Lee, White up for Naismith    University of Kentucky junior center Randolph Morris, Indiana University junior forward D.J. White and Western Kentucky University junior guard Courtney Lee are among 50 preseason candidates for the Naismith Trophy, presented to the top NCAA Division I men's basketball player.
  • CATS GET RUN DOWN    After an 80-63 loss to No. 12 Memphis yesterday, Kentucky Coach Tubby Smith said his team "hit a wall." To which, ESPN analyst Jay Bilas wryly noted, "Must have been a big wall."
  • UK still losing games despite losing baggage    So it wasn't all Rajon Rondo's fault. And it wasn't all a lack of strength and conditioning. And it wasn't all Patrick Sparks, or chemistry, or whatever it was that supposedly caused Kentucky basketball to suffer through a sub-par campaign last season.
  • Cats fall to Memphis 80-63 in Maui Invitational    Freshman Willie Kemp scored 10 of his 12 points in the opening four minutes of the second half and No. 12 Memphis dominated No. 20 Kentucky in an 80-63 victory Wednesday in the third-place game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.

  • Bruins hold off Wildcats    UK falls short in Maui semifinal    It started with the University of Kentucky basketball team's freshmen showing they're ready for prime time. But UK's 73-68 loss to UCLA last night in the Maui Invitational semifinals ended with the Wildcats coming up just short of the big time.

  • Tamme honored by coaches    Kentucky junior tight end Jacob Tamme will be featured as the SEC Community Service Team Player of the Week during Saturday's Lincoln Financial Sports telecast of the Kentucky-Tennessee game.
  • Sanders happy to be Blue    UK QUARTERBACKS COACH AT PEACE AFTER LEAVING VOLS    Kentucky at Tennessee When: 12:30 p.m. TV: WKYT-27 For 22 years, Randy Sanders spent his Saturdays bleeding orange. He lettered as a quarterback at the University of Tennessee from 1984-88, then worked his way up the ladder from a volunteer assistant to a successful coordinator who ran the UT offense when it beat Florida State for the national championship in 1999.
  • Andre' Woodson is Cats' point man    There is a publicity arm to the University of Kentucky's athletic department, a media relations office whose job description includes generating buzz about its football players.
  • UK's literary lineman    Hayden Lane was a little surprised when the interview request came. Injured offensive linemen who have played their last college football game don't usually garner much ink. But this 6-foot-6, 275-pound senior tackle for the University of Kentucky shouldn't be allowed to fade into Wildcats history just yet.
  • Vols actually a nice change of pace    Tennessee is tied as the second-highest scoring team in the Southeastern Conference, yet the University of Kentucky is happy to face the Volunteers. That's because Tennessee quarterback Erik Ainge isn't a big scrambler or improviser, and the Vols' offense isn't about to go run-and-shoot.

  • No. 20 Cats outlast DePaul, 87-81    Randolph Morris scored 20 points, including nine of Kentucky's final 11, and the 20th-ranked Wildcats held off DePaul 87-81 Monday night in the opening round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.
  • Morris the man in Maui    Kentucky's 87-81 victory over DePaul here last night mocked Hawaii's famously carefree philosophy of hang loose.
  • Fans in Hawaii show Rupp how it's done    NOTHING LAID-BACK ABOUT THIS SLICE OF BIG BLUE NATION    Here in the islands, they are the sun-tanned sixth man, filling the beaches, the shops, the hotels, the ocean, then heading over to the Lahaina Civic Center for the real reason for the trip.
  • Cats go inside to win in Hawaii    Morris, UK show up big to advance past DePaul    DePaul had the retro uniforms with the candy-stripe trim. They had the flashy slashers and the eye-popping plays, and though their fans were limited in number at the Lahaina Civic Center, the Blue Demons drew a slew of "oohs." • Leanin' on Keenan    Burton's three TDs make up for Cats' porous defense    Kentucky Coach Rich Brooks started his post-game news conference as he always does, by going over his team's injury report. • Blocks, miscues too much for Miami    At first, especially if you didn't know him too well, you might have thought that Charlie Coles was just getting his facts mixed up. • Dogs clipped by Kentucky late    Tony Dixon's 3-yard run with a minute left lifted Kentucky to a 24-20 comeback victory over Georgia, snapping a nine-game losing streak against the defending Southeastern Conference champs. The victory, which sent members of the Homecoming crowd pouring onto the Commonwealth Stadium field to remove a goal post, was a much-sought, program-defining win for coach Rich Brooks.
