  • Kentucky vs. Tennessee Tech Pre-Game Press Conference Quotes     Head Coach Tubby Smith    On the Georgia State game… “We’re trying to make the necessary adjustments after the game the other night. I thought there were a lot of things we needed to address. Guarding the three-point shot is something we’ve tried to work hard on and something we’ll have to do a better job with against a good Tennessee Tech team. In the game against Georgia State, Michael Perry and his staff did a good job of running things at us we hadn’t seen. They gave us some looks to work on and exposed some of the areas we needed to improve in, like taking care of the basketball. After being very good with our ball handling in the first half, the second half, we were pretty shaky with our turnovers.
  • Saul knows what to expect from dad's team    Saul Smith, now in his first season as an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech, will return to Rupp Arena tonight for the first time as the visitor, and he figures to be taking a lot more than he dishes out.
  • Dewalt to participate in drills this week     After their conversation yesterday, football freshman Lonnell Dewalt and Kentucky Coach Tubby Smith will explore the possibility of the player joining the basketball team.
  • Wildcats have one more UNC tuneup     With a showdown against North Carolina looming later this week, Kentucky basketball coach Tubby Smith wants his team to focus on the matter at hand: playing Tennessee Tech.
  • Azubuike looking for cure for shot     Kentucky will play North Carolina this Saturday with hopes that its offensive wizard can find a cure for the spell that has jinxed his jump shot.
  • Father, son meet as opponents     The son learned as much as he could from his father when he tagged along with him to work at the gym.
  • Routs not fooling Smith, Cats   It seems to be a basketball paradox. Kentucky dominates its early-season opposition. Coach Tubby Smith finds no difficulty in convincing his players of their shortcomings.
  • IF THOMAS REDSHIRTS, CATS WOULD HAVE ROSTER SPOT OPEN   After their conversation yesterday, football freshman Lonnell Dewalt and Kentucky Coach Tubby Smith will explore the possibility of the player joining the basketball team.

  • Without Potts, Wildcats can't keep up with 17th-ranked Knights     Michelle Campbell scored 17 points to lead No. 17 Rutgers to a 75-60 win over Kentucky in the Paradise Jam tournament yesterday.
  • No. 17 Rutgers Too Much For Cats   Rutgers forward Michelle Campbell scored 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as the No. 17/18 Scarlet Knights defeated Kentucky 75-60 in the championship game of the Paradise Jam Saturday in the UVI Sports and Fitness Center in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.

  • It's Coach Smith vs. Coach Smith this week    EX-UK GUARD SAUL SMITH HAS FOUND HIS NICHE AS AN ASSISTANT AT TENNESSEE TECH, UK'S NEXT OPPONENT    A phone call yesterday morning caught former Kentucky point guard Saul Smith in a hotel room in Boone, N.C. He was planning ahead.

      Football

  • For 20 years, Wildcats endure same ending     Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer was - in a word - relieved.
  • Wildcats Fall Short in Final Seconds Against Vols    Gerald Riggs ran 12 yards for a touchdown with 38 seconds remaining and No. 15 Tennessee rallied to beat Kentucky 37-31 Saturday.
  • Another almost for Cats    Ultimately, the University of Kentucky football team's 37-31 season-ending loss at Tennessee yesterday will go down as another giant fish tale — one that got away despite the Wildcats' best efforts.
  • Vols go around the block   TD at :38 kills hopes of another Dewalt denial   The scenario yesterday went as follows: Kentucky 31, Tennessee 29, three minutes and 31 seconds on the Neyland Stadium clock, Tennessee with the ball on its own 40-yard line.
  • Offense by committee produces for UK   The University of Kentucky's offense took on a new look in the absence of coordinator Ron Hudson, who resigned last week.
  • It's a familiar ending, but an unfamiliar tale    UK TOOK ITS BEST SHOT AT TENNESSEE    Only the ending seemed the same. Painfully the same, to be sure. For the past 20 years, the Kentucky Wildcats have been playing the Tennessee Volunteers in football, and for 20 straight years now, the Kentucky Wildcats have been losing games to the Tennessee Volunteers in football. Most by a lot. Some by a little. A few, as was yesterday's, by heartbreak; Tennessee scoring with 38 seconds remaining for a 37-31 win.
  • Boyd's swan song has bittersweet ending    'I REALLY BELIEVED WE WERE GOING TO DO IT'    The final time Shane Boyd led Kentucky onto a football field, he got it right. Mostly. After five years of frustration and second guessing -- Talk show consensus: Shane Boyd, he couldn't throw soap into the bathtub; he's no quarterback -- the UK QB fired with pin-point accuracy all around the gargantuan football edifice known as Neyland Stadium
  • Seniors take pains to set example    Kentucky had several seniors finish their careers with a bang yesterday. Quarterback Shane Boyd had one of his best games as a Wildcat, passing for 218 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Vincent "Sweet Pea" Burns, Ellery Moore and Earven Flowers fought through injuries to contribute to the Cats' near win.
  • UPSET DENIED    Tennessee scores TD with :38 left for the win   Gerald Riggs scored on a 12-yard run with 38 seconds left in the game to lift Tennessee over Kentucky 37-31 in Neyland Stadium.

  • Wildcats Fall To South Dakota State in Final Seconds   A driving lay-up by South Dakota State’s Shannon Schlagel with 4 seconds remaining in the game propelled the Jackrabbits past the Kentucky women’s basketball team, 57-55, Friday in the second day of the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands
  • Cats lose on layup with 0:04 remaining   A driving layup by South Dakota State's Shannon Schlagel with four seconds left propelled the Jackrabbits past the Kentucky women's basketball team 57-55 yesterday in the second day of the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.
  • UK falls to South Dakota State 57-55   Shannon Schlagel's layup with four seconds remaining lifted the Jackrabbits (4-1) over the Wildcats (3-1) in a different Paradise Jam tourney in St. Thomas.

          Men

  • No. 8 Kentucky Steamrolls Georgia State     Chuck Hayes and Kelenna Azubuike each had 16 points and nine rebounds Friday night, leading No. 8 Kentucky past Georgia State 77-59.
  • Hayes sparks 77-59 UK romp   Hayes narrowly missed his third straight double-double to start the season, but he played perhaps his best all-around game as the No.8-ranked Wildcats rolled past Georgia State last night in Rupp Arena.
  • UK win an inside job    Cats feed post players while shooters struggle    We knew about tryptophans, that chemical in turkey that reduces Thanksgiving eaters to drowsy couch potatoes. Kentucky's 77-59 victory over Georgia State last night suggested those gobblers contain "trey-tophans," which apparently take the life out of a team's three-point attack.
  • Cruise control for 'Cats    There was plenty of time for University of Kentucky head coach Tubby Smith to experiment with his lineup during the eighth-ranked Wildcats' game against Georgia State Friday night at Rupp Arena. The results were what Smith expected before the season started.
  • UK 3-FOR-8 FROM LINE AFTER TIMEOUTS   The new rule giving television timeouts priority over free-throw attempts got multiple applications in Kentucky's victory over Georgia State last night.

      Football

  • UT 37  --  UT  31  (Final)  TN scores TD with 38 seconds left to win game
  • Brooks: A win would be huge    VOLS ALREADY HAVE SEC TITLE GAME BERTH    Today marks the 100th football meeting between Tennessee and Kentucky, and there's even less at stake than usual in the lopsided series.
  • Underdog Cats face understudy   Kentucky must make Tennessee move the ball through the air. While the Wildcats have not stopped anybody on the ground, they'd like to keep tailbacks Cedric Houston and Gerald Riggs in check and force quarterback Rick Clausen to beat them.
  • GAMES WITHIN THE GAME   Breaking down today's UK-Tennessee matchup   Kentucky receivers coach/recruiting coordinator Joker Phillips is a top candidate to succeed Ron Hudson as UK's offensive coordinator. Phillips will assist head coach Rich Brooks and offensive line coach Paul Dunn in calling the plays today. While playing Tennessee in Knoxville isn't the ideal setting for an audition, you have to think it will improve Phillips' odds if the Kentucky offense can show more today than it has during the previous 10 games
  • In Kentucky, it's either score or be scorned   For any ailments you have from watching/playing/trying to ignore football in this state, we have found the remedy. Offense.
  • MCBRIDE LAID FOUNDATION FOR UTES' FUTURE SUCCESS    Utah is all but in the Bowl Championship Series after going undefeated during the regular season. And while UK assistant Ron McBride is miles away from the place he used to call home, he's all smiles when he thinks about the Ute program that he practically built from the ground up.

  • Wildcats Lose Heartbreaker in Paradise Jam     South Dakota State's Shannon Schlagel's layup with four seconds left handed the Jackrabbits a 57-55 win over the Kentucky Wildcats Friday at the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands. Sara Potts was the leading scorer for the Cats for the fourth straight game with 24 points.

          Men

  • UK  77  --  GSU  59  (Final)
  • Pre-Game Press Conference Quotes     Head Coach Tubby Smith   On Saturday’s Coppin State game… “We played a good Coppin State team that was without two starters and their leading scorer. After looking at the tape, I saw there were things we needed to improve on. Coppin State has a team that will be playing for their conference championship at the end of the season. I like the way our guys played, and I like the way we competed. I thought our freshmen did a good job. Kelenna (Azubuike) and Chuck (Hayes) struggled offensively, but they made up with their leadership. That’s something you’ll see continuously this year. Chuck does it in other areas as far as getting on the boards and getting to the free-throw line. Kelenna needs to be patient. I thought he missed a couple of shots that threw him off. We need to pass the ball better and make the extra pass.”
  • Another foe with disruption in mind     Georgia State basketball coach Michael Perry was excited when he saw that Ball State hung with eighth-ranked Kentucky until midway through the second half Tuesday night
  • Smith's old friend is new foe    FINAL FOUR BUDDIES TUBBY, GSU COACH PERRY GO BACK TO LATE '70S    From the small-world department: The head coaches in tonight's Kentucky game were in the same Indianapolis hotel room in 1997 when Georgia State declared its big-time basketball ambitions by hiring Lefty Dreisell as coach.
  • China trip an eye-opener for Perry    Tubby Smith's words floated through the air like a waft of smoke before evaporating. "Bobby Perry is the most improved player on the team," the University of Kentucky basketball coach said at the team's preseason media day.
  • Doubts creep in on 'Cats    The distress signals came in the form of traveling calls, charges, an air ball and two shots that hit the backboard. For about 25 minutes during the University of Kentucky's 20-point victory against Ball State Tuesday night at U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, the Wildcats didn't look like the eighth-ranked team in the country.

  • Cats take on Oregon State in Virgin Islands tourney   Kentucky will meet first-time opponent Oregon State at 6 tonight in the opening round of the Paradise Jam at the University of Virgin Islands Sport and Fitness Center in St. Thomas.

          Men

  • Tubby's basting the turkey    By the way University of Kentucky head coach Tubby Smith expressed mock indignation over a reporter's question, you would have thought the guilty party had challenged Smith's game management. But the topic was much more serious.
  • Hayes excels, but there's a hitch   SENIOR KEEPS WORKING ON JUMPER RELEASE  POINT    As flaws go, it's about as disturbing as a freckle on Catherine Zeta-Jones' forearm. That's about how easily Kentucky basketball accepts the mechanical error in Chuck Hayes' jump shot. Coaches being coaches, Tubby Smith and company keep trying to get Hayes to shed the habit of shooting on the way down rather than at the peak of his jump.
  • What's wrong with Azubuike?    For a player who thought this would be his year to shine, Kelenna Azubuike is not off to the kind of start he wanted.
  • UK has a 3-headed center    Finding a true center in college basketball is becoming more and more rare. Even tall players prefer to be known as power forwards and almost every player, regardless of size, wants to be known as someone who can run the court and shoot the outside jump shot.

  • DON'T EXPECT MUCH CHANGE ON OFFENSE   Rich Brooks is in the market for an offensive coordinator. Countless people figure to put their two cents in on which direction Brooks should go, but the bottom line is who Brooks thinks is the best fit.
  • Brooks not about to re-invent the wheel for Vols   DON'T EXPECT MUCH CHANGE ON OFFENSE   Rich Brooks is in the market for an offensive coordinator. Countless people figure to put their two cents in on which direction Brooks should go, but the bottom line is who Brooks thinks is the best fit.
  • Brooks is still here but on thin ice    What we should be thankful for: That in football, UK did the right and admirable thing in keeping Rich Brooks for another year.

  • No. 8 Kentucky Finishes Off Ball State, 73-53     Patrick Sparks got Kentucky started and Shagari Alleyne's dunks finished off Ball State.
  • UK shakes off pesky Ball State    It was a mutual agreement between friends, a shared decision that kept point guard Patrick Sparks and center Shagari Alleyne after practices last season to work on lobs and dunks and shooting.
  • Big Cat, big catalyst   Alleyne's play fires up crowd, unsettles Cardinals    Chuck Hayes saw king-size symmetry in Kentucky's 73-53 victory over Ball State here last night. "Probably the biggest guy on the team gave us the biggest spark," Hayes said.
  • Second-Half Surge Lifts No. 8 Kentucky Past Ball State     Sophomore Peyton Stovall scored 14 points and handed out a game-high four assists to lead three Cardinals in double-figure scoring, but eighth-ranked Kentucky used a 26-8 run over an 11-minute span in the second half to escape U.S. Bank Arena with a 73-53 victory Tuesday night.
  • Alleyne grows as Kentucky threat     Standing at mid-court during a timeout, University of Kentucky senior Chuck Hayes leaped into the air to give 7-foot-3 Shagari Alleyne a celebratory chest bump as the Wildcats started pulling away from Ball State
  • Cats tower over Ball St., 73-53    The towering 7-foot-3 center turned the space above the rim into his own private playground last night at U.S. Bank Arena, delivering a career-high 10 points in the University of Kentucky basketball team's 73-53 victory over Ball State.
  • 'Best shooter I've ever played with'    HAYES, COACHES CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THE SPARK SPARKS PROVIDES FOR KENTUCKY    The rust is officially off. What we saw in twin exhibitions and a breeze of a season opener was bits and pieces, little more than a tantalizing tease. Last night, second half, this was the real Patrick Sparks.
  • UK answers wakeup call    Two days before Thanksgiving, the University of Kentucky was theoretically supposed to feast on Ball State at U.S. Bank Arena on Tuesday night. Eventually it did. During a game in which a lot went wrong for UK early on, a late run propelled the Wildcats to a 73-53 victory against the Cardinals, who did not get worn down until about midway through the second half.
  • Ball State coach sings praises of Smith   Ball State's Tim Buckley continued what's become a habit of opposing coaches: Suggesting that Kentucky fans do not appreciate how Tubby Smith directs the Cats.

      Football

  • Hudson gone, but Barnhart says Brooks to return     Rather than continue to have his job status questioned and performance questioned, Kentucky offensive coordinator Ron Hudson decided to call it quits Monday.
  • UT warry of Kentucky's dreadful offense     It has been a long season for the Kentucky offense.    The Wildcats have scored just 14.2 points per game, ranking 115th out of the 117 Division 1-A schools in America.
  • Brooks lists reasons to hope against Vols    COACH SAYS OF ENDING 20-YEAR TREND: 'IT'S POSSIBLE'    Now that Kentucky Coach Rich Brooks doesn't have to worry about saving his job anymore, he can turn his focus on salvaging the Wildcats' 2004 season.
  • College Football Notebook     Joker Phillips, Chris Hatcher and Larry Fedora are among the coaches expected to be considered for the University of Kentucky football team's offensive coordinator position.

  • More pressure in Cats' future    UK flashed it against Coppin St. in opener    Among the Kentucky fan questions set on speed dial over the years: Will Richie get to play tonight? Translation: Will we get to cheer our lovable local hero (and future governor?)?
  • UK's Alleyne  is making  huge strides in the middle    University of Kentucky center Shagari Alleyne might be the only player not surprised by his sudden emergence.
  • Today's opponent    Ball state Location: Muncie, Ind. Enrollment: 18,043 Founded: 1918 Nickname: Cardinals School colors: Cardinal and white Conference: Mid-American
  • Wildcats face serious test   Two of the three teams the University of Kentucky has beaten in two exhibition games and its season opener were missing key players because of injuries, eligibility issues and one player's self-imposed religious hiatus.

  • UK Travels to Cincinnati for Neutral-Site Game Against Ball State    The Kentucky Wildcats will travel north to Cincinnati for their annual neutral site game at in the Queen City. The game will be Tuesday night at 7 p.m. ET at US Bank Arena against the Ball State Cardinals, who return four starters from a year ago. Coach Tubby Smith and selected players talked to the media Monday afternoon.
  • A net diversion in hoops heaven    Call it their Wildcat Weekend.   By their own admissions, the global tennis stars/divas/sensational sisterhood that is Venus and Serena Williams knew next to nothing about the local religion that is Kentucky basketball.
  • Venus the new goddess of Big Blue love    Ashley Judd had better watch out. The self-proclaimed No.1 fan of the University of Kentucky basketball team might have some competition.
  • New dynamic duo drives UK    Patrick Sparks can't quite explain it - he and Rajon Rondo just know how to play together.
  • UK again rules boards by a huge margin   Three times in a row Jennifer Humphrey missed her layup. All three times, the junior came down with the rebound and put it back up.
  • Wildcats guards build chemistry   Perhaps University of Kentucky junior guard Patrick Sparks forgot that the intended recipient of his alley-oop pass was freshman backcourt mate Rajon Rondo, not 6-foot-5 leaper Kelenna Azubuike or former Wildcat Kenny "Sky" Walker.
  • Rondo's play says plenty    Since he's no longer allowed to talk to the media, Kentucky freshman guard Rajon Rondo let his play speak for him.

  • UK 84  --  FAMU  55 (Final)
  • UK Hoops Downs Florida A&M, 84-55     Mickie DeMoss' team won their second game in as many outings, 84-55 of Florida A&M this afternoon at Memorial Coliseum. Sara Potts lead the way with 21 points followed by Jennifer Humphrey with 12 points and Sade Buley with 10 points.
  • Wildcats Pounce Rattlers   Senior guard Sara Potts led a trio of Kentucky players that scored in double-figures and junior forward Jennifer Humphrey tallied the fourth double-double of her career as the Wildcats rolled over Florida A&M, 84-55, Sunday in Memorial Coliseum.
  • SILENT BUT GOLDEN   UK freshmen make statement without saying a word   Looking for some Rajon Rondo quotes about his first real-deal college game? No dice. Craving a morsel from Randolph Morris? No luck.
  • Rondo a force as UK rips Coppin State 77-46   For a stretch early in the second half, the Rupp Arena announcer could have been replaced with a recording that repeated Rajon Rondo's name every few seconds.
  • Sparks' debut with Wildcats is a happy one     After a season on the sideline, the University of Kentucky's Patrick Sparks celebrated his return to the basketball court.
  • Kentucky coach bringing in star freshmen slowly     Kentucky freshman Rajon Rondo can dunk off one foot. He can dunk off two feet. He's only 6-foot-1, but he can throw down an alley-oop.
  • UK defense steals show in debut     If there were any doubt about the mettle of a Kentucky club filled with four freshmen and a junior transfer, the No. 9 Wildcats crushed it in a 77-46 defeat of Coppin State at Rupp Arena Saturday afternoon.
  • Cats call the roll   UK shows off its new cast in season-opening rout   It's a given that Kentucky will rely on veterans Chuck Hayes and Kelenna Azubuike this season. But the opening 77-46 victory over Coppin State yesterday proved the Cats are not dependent on the twosome as scorers.
  • These are some scary Cats    New Kentucky debuted yesterday with Patrick Sparks flipping a lob pass, underhanded, between two defenders. Rajon Rondo climbed after it.
  • Long lost brothers?   We knew Kentucky set the recruiting goal of finding a replacement for senior Chuck Hayes. But who knew that a Hayes look-a-like, a player with an uncanny resemblance to the UK star, loomed on the basketball horizon?
  • DeMoss looks for defensive intensity vs. Florida A&M   The Kentucky women didn't have long to celebrate their first win of the season on Friday night, instead they had to start preparing for another opponent -- with a completely different playing style -- right away.
  • Big-time foes have benefits for Coppin    The money is nice. Coppin State athletic director and basketball coach Ron "Fang" Mitchell will be the first to admit that playing one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the nation while raising about $400,000 for the school's athletic department sure beats other forms of fund-raising such as schmoozing with boosters
  • KENTUCKY CONNECTS ON 10 THREE-POINTERS IN ROUT OF COPPIN STATE   Practice may not have made perfect, but Kentucky's extra shooting sessions made a difference in yesterday's season-opening victory over Coppin State.

  • Cats ready to get their feet wet    SMITH SAYS SCHEDULE IS SET UP THE RIGHT WAY   Kentucky's players might prefer to jump immediately and repeatedly into college basketball's competitive deep end. But UK Coach Tubby Smith likes the way this year's schedule allows the Cats to ease slowly into shallow water before wading into more challenging currents.

  • For Carrier, practice doesn't make perfect   At Memorial Coliseum, he apparently shoots the lights out. At Rupp Arena, he shoots as if the lights were out. Such is the disparity in Josh Carrier's shooting accuracy. The Kentucky senior has been the team's best shooter in practice, UK Coach Tubby Smith says. But in the two exhibition games, he missed all five of his attempts.

  • Tubby silences freshmen on eve of opener     All of them have played in front of the raucous Rupp Arena fans. Three of them have experienced the hoopla of the McDonald's High School All-American game. And two of them have already broken in to Tubby Smith's starting lineup.
  • He's off-court All-American    While many UK players happily insulate themselves in Wildcat Lodge, Chuck Hayes goes out of his way to involve himself in his community, often dropping by unannounced at Lexington-area middle schools.
