In 1999, he decided to become a college coach and, coincidentally, got to start at the top because his alma mater wanted to invigorate a middle-aged staff with youthful energy.
  • Ex-UK recruit gets one-year jail sentence    Former University of Kentucky basketball recruit Michael Southall was ordered Friday to spend a year in jail for violating probation on a 2000 drug conviction, the La Crosse (Wis.) Tribune reported.

  • UK fines assistant football coach   TICKET-TRADING INQUIRY PROVES INCONCLUSIVE   Although unable to prove or disprove an allegation about misuse of game tickets, the University of Kentucky reprimanded and fined assistant football coach Ron Hudson, the school announced yesterday.
  • UK docks Hudson his raise over ticket issue   University of Kentucky assistant football coach Ron Hudson will not receive his scheduled pay raise of $5,000 this year as a penalty for not monitoring his complimentary tickets closely enough.

  • UK Finishes Ticket Review    The University of Kentucky athletics department concluded Friday that Offensive Coordinator Ron Hudson was careless with his four complimentary tickets during the 2003 football season. However, following a thorough, two-week inquiry into the claim of a Lexington building contractor that he was offered game tickets in exchange for work done at the Hudson home, no verifiable evidence could be found that Hudson knowingly did so.

  • Preview 2004- Kentucky Wildcats    Kentucky has gone back to being a program in desperate search for an identity. A few years ago it was the high-octane Hal Mumme offense chucking it all over the field, gambling on fourth downs and generally scaring everyone in the SEC who didn't want to face the attack. Guy Morriss had UK playing extremely well before leaving, and now the team is trying to figure out what the next step is going to be.
  • Players you should know in 2004    Who is Vincent Burns? ... Defensive ends aren't supposed to make a ton of tackles. They're supposed to get pressure on the quarterback, hold the line against the run and get sacks and pressures. Tackles are for linebackers and safeties. But Kentucky's Vincent "Sweet Pea" Burns isn't your normal defensive end.

  • Bat Cats end season with loss    Warner Jones hit two home runs and had three RBI as Vanderbilt beat Kentucky 11-5 yesterday, giving the Commodores a three-game sweep.
  • Graeter and Stewart Named All-SEC by SEBaseball.com   Kentucky seniors Spencer Graeter and Caleb Stewart have been named to the All-Southeastern Conference baseball team by SEBaseball.com. The web site, which is dedicated to covering college baseball in the southeastern portion of the U.S., placed Graeter on the second team and Stewart on the third team.

  • Lagrange, Ga., pipeline overflows with prospects    University of Kentucky recruiting coordinator Joker Phillips definitely knows his way around Lagrange, Ga. Phillips brought in receiver Quentin McCord to UK from Lagrange in his first stint at UK and also signed safety Wesley Woodyard to this year's incoming class. 
  • Coaches watching Danville's Turner    During the time he's won seven state championships and 193 games at Danville, coach Sam Harp has had many talented players. However, he's never had one receiving as much attention from Division I coaches as early as what running back Kelvin Turner is.

  • Kentucky Finishes Season With 11-5 Loss at Vanderbilt    Vanderbilt scored three times in the seventh and four more in the eighth, coming from behind to beat Kentucky, 11-5, on Sunday afternoon in Nashville. The game was the last for Kentucky in 2004, which finished with a 24-30 mark, including 7-23 in Southeastern Conference play. Vanderbilt improves to 39-16, 16-14 in the SEC.
  • Vanderbilt Takes Second Game From Kentucky    John Shelby belted two home runs for Kentucky on Saturday, but it was not enough as Vanderbilt scored twice in the first inning and three times in each the second and third frames, to beat the Wildcats, 8-6, in Nashville. The win was the 38th of the season for Vanderbilt (38-16, 15-14 SEC), setting a school record.

  • Vanderbilt Ace Sowers Beats Kentucky, 9-1    Vanderbilt starting pitcher Jeremy Sowers held Kentucky to one run on just four hits, as the home standing Commodores beat Kentucky, 9-1, on Friday night in Nashville. Sowers, rated by many as the top left-handed pitcher in the country, struck out eight UK batters along the way before giving way to Tyler Rhoden with two outs in the eighth inning.

  • NORSE TO PLAY CATS IN NOV. 3 EXHIBITION    With a better-late-than-never attitude, Derek Smith has a chance to play in a University of Kentucky basketball game. Smith, who pulled the plug on his still-born pro football career last month, intends to enroll at Northern Kentucky University this summer. If he does well in two classes, he will be academically eligible to join NKU's basketball program.
  • Wildcats will play exhibition game against Northern Kentucky    When Northern Kentucky plays Kentucky in an exhibition basketball game Nov. 3, coach Dave Bezold anticipates one potential problem.  
  • CVC expanding with hopes of featuring UK-Duke    Kansas is out of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in November and Kentucky is in, assuming the organizers win a lawsuit against the NCAA over the 2-in-4 rule. Kentucky and Duke, which is also in the event with Syracuse and Cal, don't have an exemption remaining.

  • Wildcats Route Murray State, 9-1, in Final Home Game    Kentucky scored five times in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to a 9-1 beating of Murray State on Wednesday night at Cliff Hagan Stadium. Six UK pitchers held the Thoroughbreds to just one earned run on eight hits, as Kalen Gibson (5-3) picked up his fifth win of the season. The game was the final home contest of 2004 for the Wildcats.
  • Kentucky Travels to Vanderbilt to Conclude Season    The Kentucky baseball team will wrap up its season this weekend when it travels to Nashville, Tenn., for a three-game Southeastern Conference series with the Vanderbilt Commodores. The Wildcats won their final home game of the season over Murray State, 9-1, on Wednesday, and enter the weekend with a 24-27 mark, including a 9-20 record in SEC play. The Commodores are 36-16, 13-14 in the SEC.

  • Judge strips Azubuike's father of public defender    HEARING ON BOND VIOLATIONS IS FRIDAY    After reviewing financial records yesterday, a judge ordered that the father of University of Kentucky basketball player Kelenna Azubuike could no longer use a public defender in an 18-count fraud indictment.
  • Smith's youngest son to walk on at Ole Miss    Tubby Smith is nowhere near as prolific as his parents, who produced 17 children. But what the Kentucky coach and wife, Donna, lack in quantity, they have made up for in quality.

  • Barnhart says patience pays off for Smith    He's not ready to ordain Kentucky as the next national champion, but Mitch Barnhart isn't going to deny that he's excited about the recruiting class that basketball coach Tubby Smith put together.
  • Tubby's youngest to walk on with Rebs    Ole Miss landed a basketball commitment Tuesday from a well recognized name, and is also in the mix for a major-college transfer who is said to possess a big-time game.
  • UK, UC and OSU will test Norse    Thanks to an NCAA rule change, Northern Kentucky University is close to finalizing an exhibition game with the University of Kentucky in men's basketball this fall as part of a preseason that also will include the University of Cincinnati and Ohio State.

  • Kentucky Baseball Announces Cancellation    The Kentucky baseball team has announced that its scheduled game with Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday, May 18, has been cancelled due to an EKU scheduling conflict. The game was supposed to be a make-up game from a rain out back on March 31.
  • Kentucky to Play Murray State in Final Home Game of Season    Kentucky will have its final home game of the 2004 season when it plays host to the Murray State Thoroughbreds on Wednesday evening at Cliff Hagan Stadium. The Wildcats stand at 23-27 under first-year head coach John Cohen, and also have a road series with Vanderbilt remaining on the schedule.

  • Morris supports Morriss    Former University of Kentucky football coach Guy Morriss didn't need long to make a fan out of John Morris, a 1977 Danville High School graduate who lives in Waco, Texas, and works for the Baylor radio network.

  • Wildcats Give Great Effort, Come Up Just Short, 12-11    Jake Kungl was 4-for-5 with two runs batted in, and Kentucky pounded out 11 runs on 14 hits, but it was not enough, as the Cats fell to the Alabama Crimson Tide, 12-11, on Sunday in Lexington. The win gave the Tide the series and dropped the Wildcats to 23-27 on the season, including a 7-20 mark in Southeastern Conference play. Alabama improved to 29-23, 10-17 in the SEC.
  • Bama rallies last, takes series    After falling behind Alabama 6-5 yesterday, the University of Kentucky baseball team rallied for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for an 11-6 cushion

  • Graeter Delivers in the 12th Inning, Cats Beat Tide, 9-8    Senior Spencer Graeter’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 12th inning scored Billy Grace with the game’s winning run, as the Wildcats celebrated Senior Night with a 9-8 win over the visiting Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday. The Kentucky win evened the three-game Southeastern Conference series at a game a piece, setting up Sunday’s rubber match at 1 p.m. (ET).

  • Wade LeBlanc Spectacular to Beat Kentucky, 6-2    Alabama freshman pitcher Wade LeBlanc held Kentucky to just two runs on six hits, as he threw a complete game and struck out six batters on Friday night at Cliff Hagan Stadium. The win improved LeBlanc’s record to 8-4 and the Crimson Tide to 28-22 (9-16 Southeastern Conference). UK fell to 22-26 with the loss, and 6-19 in SEC play. 
  • Kentucky Plays Host to Alabama Over the Weekend    Kentucky will play host to the Alabama Crimson Tide this weekend in a three-game Southeastern Conference series at Cliff Hagan Stadium. The series will be the last of the season at home for the Wildcats.

Lubrano allowed just the one unearned run, while striking out nine and facing just two batters over the minimum for the game.
  • Surging Georgia sweeps Bat Cats   Georgia stretched its winning streak to nine games as senior left-hander Paul Lubrana threw the team's first complete game in three years in a 5-1 win over visiting Kentucky yesterday.

  • Georgia Takes Game, Series From Kentucky With 7-2 Win    Kentucky could muster just two runs on seven hits against the Georgia trio of Michael Hyle, Bo Lanier and Mitchell Boggs on Saturday, as the Cats fell to the Bulldogs, 7-2, in Athens. The loss dropped Kentucky to 20-21 and 5-15 in Southeastern Conference play.
  • 4-run sixth carries Bulldogs past Bat Cats   Justin Holmes' two-run double sparked a four-run sixth inning that helped carry Georgia to its eighth victory in a row, 7-2 over Kentucky yesterday.

  • NCAA reforms: 'seismic shifts' or tiny tremors?   The changes announced Thursday in college athletics were called "seismic shifts" by University of Washington acting president Lee Huntsman. He said they will "change the calculus of how we recruit student-athletes."
