  • Griffith Resigns at UK    Rick Griffith, assistant women's basketball coach at the University of Kentucky, has resigned at UK and accepted the position as head coach of the girls' basketball team at Paul Dunbar High School in Lexington.

As retiring commissioner Roy Kramer conducts his final spring meetings this week in Destin, Fla., the Southeastern Conference has never been so green.   • McCaslin Named to SEC Good Works At-Large Team    Liz McCaslin, a junior on the University of Kentucky volleyball team, has been named to the Southeastern Conference Good Works At-Large team, it was announced by the conference office last week. The at-large team represents 17 SEC sponsored sports as well as men's soccer and lacrosse. The Good Works Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts

  • UK gets 1st recruit from class of 2003    The University of Kentucky men's basketball team received its first commitment from the high school class of 2003 Sunday night. Bobby Perry, a 6-foot-7 forward from Durham (N.C.) Hillside High School, informed coach Tubby Smith of his decision after visiting UK over the weekend. Perry said he called Smith when he returned to Durham and told him he wanted to be a Wildcat.

  • NCAA is 'moo-ving' to synthetic basketballs    The leather basketballs used in NCAA tournaments have been benched permanently. The organization said next season it will switch to balls made of synthetic materials. The decision comes after animal-rights activists complained about the use of leather.

  • Vandy repays Cats with 17-4 rout    A day after Kentucky beat Vanderbilt 19-7, the Commodores returned the favor yesterday with a 17-4 victory in Nashville over the Wildcats sparked by a grand slam by Karl Nonemaker.

  • UK's problems run deeper than player exits    The first move in the overhaul of the University of Kentucky basketball program came late last week when Tubby Smith sent three players packing.  All three - Cory Sears, Adam Chiles and Rashaad Carruth - spent time in Smith's doghouse last season as Kentucky, with Final Four aspirations, needed a late-season push to salvage a mediocre year.

The USA Basketball Women's Collegiate Committee will announce the finalists for the U.S. squad after trials May 17-19 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

  • UK lands defensive end from Georgia    Travis Day, a defensive end from Columbus, Ga., has signed to play football at the University of Kentucky, the school announced yesterday. The 6-foot-3, 245-pound Day was an all-region and all-city selection as a senior at Carver High School. A three-year starter, he had 404 career tackles, including 15 sacks.
  • Defensive end signs with UK football team    Travis Day, a 6-foot-3, 245-pound defensive end from Columbus, Ga., has signed to play football at Kentucky, the school said Wednesday.

Smith also announced that Ravi Moss, an All-State guard from University Heights Academy in Hopkinsville, will walk on to the team next season and that three-year starter Keith Bogans will return for his senior season at UK.
