  • UK offers forward scholarship    UNHERALDED NEW YORKER 'A LATE BLOOMER'    Prep school looked like the best option for Tyrone Nash last week. That was before he got a call and a full-scholarship offer from Kentucky basketball coach Tubby Smith to join the Cats for the 2006-07 season.
  • Pitino-Rondo-Telfair triangle comes full circle    Chapter No. 997 billion why real life is far more fascinating than fiction. Rick Pitino was the head basketball coach at Kentucky. He left to become head coach of the Boston Celtics. When the bottom fell out of that, he became head coach of the University of Louisville.
  • Lindsey Wilson set for November exhibition     Lindsey Wilson basketball fans will blend in with the color motif when they cheer on the Blue and White in Rupp Arena on Nov. 2. The fans will be cheering for the Blue Raiders when they play an exhibition game against Kentucky at a time to be announced.
  • Rondo feeling good to go in green    Celtics were high on ex-UK guard    Seeing retired jerseys and championship banners hanging from the rafters was nothing new to Rajon Rondo. He just has to get used to seeing them in green. The former University of Kentucky guard made his first trip to Boston yesterday as a member of the Celtics. Boston traded for Rondo after the Phoenix Suns made him the 21st pick in Wednesday's NBA draft.
  • Mackey Gets UK Offer    UK coach Tubby Smith has extended a scholarship offer to Scott County guard Bud Mackey.  Mackey is 6'3'' and just completed his sophomore year for the Cardinals.  Mackey is a prospect for the 2008 season.
  • Tourney expansion gets denied    The NCAA's little guys could still get locked out of the most lucrative championship event in college sports - even after George Mason's improbable tournament run last year.

Baseball

  • Baseball Finishes Season Ranked 20th    For the first time in 18 years, the Kentucky baseball team capped off its historic season ranked 20th in the final BaseballAmerica poll of the season.
  • Baseball Sets School-Record for Runs Scored    Kentucky plated a school-record 500 runs during the historic 2006 campaign that saw the Wildcats earn the Southeastern Conference regular season title with a school–record 44 wins.

Men

  • Rondo Selected 21st by Phoenix in NBA Draft    Former Kentucky point guard Rajon Rondo was selected by the Phoenix Suns in the first round of Wednesday night's NBA Draft. Rondo was taken 21st overall and was the first true point guard selected.
  • Rondo to Boston by way of Phoenix    The Phoenix Suns took former Kentucky point guard Rajon Rondo with the 21st pick in last night's NBA Draft. But he was traded to the Boston Celtics in return for paying off Phoenix forward Brian Grant's contract.
  • Draft history full of smart picks    It's not last night that counts. It's two years from now, or three, or more. It's down the road. You can't tell what will happen with an NBA draft pick just by the order the player was chosen.
  • Next stop Boston for UK's Rondo; Pacers for UC's White    It's off to Boston for Rajon Rondo, while James White will continue his career in Indianapolis. Eric Hicks, meanwhile, is looking for a team.
  • Rondo winds up with Celtics    UK guard taken No. 21 by Suns, then traded    Before Danny Ainge was the Boston Celtics' executive director of basketball operations, he was a point guard. And the former playmaker saw something in Rajon Rondo that many analysts did not.
  • Rondo will be either a bust or a bargain    I'd love a Chicago condominium overlooking Lake Michigan, but I'd howl if it lacked windows. iPods are a fabulous treat, but not without headphones.
  • Rondo Drafted to NBA    UK basketball star Rajon Rondo is now a Boston Celtic.

Basketball

Men

  • New draft: No kids allowed    Age rule has left top picks in doubt    Charlotte Bobcats scout Frank Ross is certain about one thing entering tonight's NBA draft: The league will be a little older and less trendy. And that, he said, is a good thing. The age minimum added to last year's collective bargaining agreement -- a player cannot enter the draft until one year after his high school class graduates and must be at least 19 years old -- will make this the first draft since 1994 in which no prepsters will be taken.
  • Rondo's shot at redemption starts with draft      The tumult will end for Rajon Rondo tonight. He will be whisked away to the NBA -- his dream, his mission -- and given expectations befitting a player with his extreme talent.

Basketball

Men

  • Rondo's status unclear    Rajon Rondo will soon know if he made the right decision by entering the NBA Draft rather than returning for his junior season at Kentucky.
  • Confusion extends to enigmatic Rondo    The (insert throat-clearing sound effect here) "experts" say 2006 is the least predictable NBA Draft in decades. No consensus No. 1 pick. No consensus on a top five (suddenly, Shelden Williams -- Shelden Williams? -- is a hot name). Same guys being mentioned both as possible lottery picks and in danger of falling out of the first round entirely.
  • Rondo one of draft's 'biggest puzzles'    But he's expected to go in first round    Former UK guard Rajon Rondo has been projected anywhere from a lottery pick to a late first-rounder in the NBA draft. The 6-foot-2 point guard is considered a defensive wizard and a first-round talent. That would ensure him a guaranteed contract worth millions.
  • Rondo Works Out For Celtics    Three point guards sprinted up and down the Celtics practice court, drove to the basket and shot jumpers on Monday.  One of them could be doing that all next season.  Boston wrapped up its pre-draft workouts by watching Randy Foye of Villanova, Rajon Rondo of Kentucky and Marcus Williams of Connecticut.

  • College basketball tourney may grow     BUT COACHES' DESIRE FOR 128-TEAM MEN'S FIELD MAY BE STRETCH    In a perfect world, college basketball coaches would nearly double the size of the 65-team NCAA men's tournament field. Realistically, they'd accept a smaller victory.
  • Coaches want NCAA to allow 128 teams in tournament    College basketball coaches will this week urge the NCAA to nearly double the size of the 65-team men's basketball tournament field during meetings in Orlando, Fla. "They'd love to see the tournament double to 128," said Jim Haney, executive director of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
  • Coaches To Urge NCAA To Expand Tourney    In a perfect world, college basketball coaches would nearly double the size of the 65-team NCAA men's tournament field. Realistically, they'd accept a smaller victory.
  • NCAA considers expanding hoops tourney    Motivated in part by George Mason's remarkable Final Four run last season, coaches will urge the NCAA to expand its most lucrative championship event during the men's and women's basketball committee meetings in Orlando, Fla., this week.

  • Florida new king of SEC recruiting    Perhaps you felt that seismic shift under your feet last weekend. In Florida, the earth moved under their flip-flops, the footwear of choice Dan Werner wants to wiggle his piggies into once he leaves the "deathtrap/suicide rap" of New Jersey for the year-round tan that is Gatorsville.

Men

  • Wade blossomed in 2003 NCAA win over Cats    I've heard people blame the 14-point loss UK suffered to Marquette in the 2003 Minneapolis Regional final on Keith Bogans' ankle sprain. I've heard others blame it on Smith's unimaginative approach to coaching offense. The more I watch the NBA playoffs, I'm convinced it was none of that. That game against UK was Dwyane Wade's coming-out party as a player who could overwhelm Kentucky, the Dallas Mavericks, the Brazilian soccer team or the Pittsburgh Steelers.
