      Newsworthy Cats from the Past

  • Morriss sings Baylor blues    Compared with this, UK a cinch   The saddest sights in sports are those of men forever traumatized by their own choices to put themselves in harm's way. Think of an old Muhammad Ali, looking like he's taken one punch too many. And then there are the really depressing examples, like the once-brilliant football coaches irrevocably dazed after spending time at Baylor.

  • State's Coaches Like Progress Demoss, Staff Have Made  Maybe the Kentucky women's basketball team's 11-16 record last season wasn't exactly the turnaround Coach Mickie DeMoss was hoping for when she took the job, but in the numbers game, she continues to be pleasantly surprised.

  • SEC East holds both experience, youth  Despite the regular season Southeastern Conference Champions hailing from the Western side of the conference, the bigger talent pools seem to hail from the East. With Kentucky claiming the tournament championship and Florida having the third best record in the conference, the East is a much tougher day-to-day fight. Though the West will look to take back some of that strength, the East is again poised to do well top to bottom.

  • West's basketball outlook   With the summer recruiting season wrapping up, basketball teams across the nation are setting their sites on the upcoming season. In the Southeastern Conference's Western Division the top (Bull)dog is returning its big star while the Tide has some question marks and the Rebels are coming off a disappointing season with hopes of turning that around. The West, especially this early, is still a tough call.

  • JUNIOR-TO-BE WILL BE KEY COG IN BACKCOURT    Kentucky will pass its torch to a younger generation next season, a taller and more athletic generation. With the departure of senior starters Gerald Fitch and Cliff Hawkins, the Cats will look to junior-to-be Kelenna Azubuike for more backcourt production, Coach Tubby Smith said yesterday.

  • Smith expects big things out of Azubuike    For his first two seasons in the University of Kentucky basketball program, Kelenna Azubuike has spent more time on the court as a follower, overshadowed by older, more experienced players.
  • Duke-less  Kentucky athletics director Mitch Barnhart says it seems unlikely that Kentucky will get to play in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic to open the season and will miss out on a possible matchup with Duke in the tourney semifinals.

KENTUCKY HEAD COACH TUBBY SMITH     (On his returning players) "We are excited about the veteran players we have returning. We know it will take some time to replace five seniors. That's the equivalent of losing 20 years of experience. We have a good nucleus, and I think that will help us."

  • Deacons lead early top 50     Rashad McCants pondered the question of who he would tab as the No. 1 team: North Carolina or Wake Forest?

  • 2004 Preview: Kentucky Wildcats  Kentucky has gone back to being a program in desperate search for an identity. A few years ago it was the high-octane Hal Mumme offense chucking it all over the field, gambling on fourth downs and generally scaring everyone in the SEC who didn't want to face the attack. Guy Morriss had UK playing extremely well before leaving, and now the team is trying to figure out what the next step is going to be

  • Kenucky Football Preview: Inside Scoop   After losing its starting QB, its best receiver, three starting O-linemen (and the top back-up), and with a group of unproven RB's on the present roster, there are some legitimate concerns on offense for the '04 Wildcats. Of course, if the engine fails, the scapegoat will most likely be senior QB Shane Boyd, who steps into the starting role after three years of backup duty behind Jared Lorenzen. Redshirt freshman Andre Woodson is destined to lead this team in the not-so-distant future, but Boyd, who has the better understanding of the offense, had a solid spring (28-of-48 for 426 yards, two passing TD's and a couple rushing TD's, in the last three scrimmages) and will get plenty of work in August to improve on his downfield passing accuracy, which has been targeted by Boyd's critics.

  • Camp counseling wearing out Hayes   WILDCATS' FORWARD DOING IT ALL IN INDY   A weary expression stuck to Kentucky forward Chuck Hayes' face as he slowly walked from the IUPUI gym to the campus hotel two blocks away. Even threatening clouds and a few rumbles of distant thunder could not quicken his dragging pace through the humid sweatbox that was Indianapolis yesterday
  • Role of camp counselor suits Hayes just fine
  • Wildcats lining up non-conference tilts    The University of Kentucky is one of four teams listed as a host for an opening-round game in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, but there is a reason there is an asterisk next to the names of the schools. Syracuse, Duke and California are the other schools listed as hosts on the event's Web site.

  • Show Me State star tops UK's wish list    MISSOURI ALREADY 'RETIRES' HANSBROUGH'S JERSEY
As arguably the nation's best high school player, Tyler Hansbrough was presumed to be on basketball's fast track. But his official recruiting visit to his home state University of Missouri earlier this year sped his athletic career to warp speed.
  • Wildcats have their eye on forward spot   The University of Kentucky basketball team is expecting to add one more recruit in its class of 2005, and forward Tyler Hansbrough has been the team's top target all along. But the Wildcats have alternatives.
  • UK eyeing blue-chip forward    Tyler Hansbrough hasn't played a college basketball game, but that didn't stop one university from paying him the ultimate compliment. When Hansbrough, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., went to Missouri on an official visit, the university held a mock jersey retirement ceremony for him. Hansbrough was impressed when he saw his No. 50 jersey hanging in the gymnasium.

  • Cousin may follow own path   J.P. PRINCE FINDS NO ROOM AT UK   Instead of kissing cousins, Kentucky basketball could feature swishing cousins. Then again, because the Wildcats replenished their backcourt in the last recruiting year, it doesn't seem likely that Tayshaun Prince's cousin will follow him to Kentucky.
  • Kentucky looks for power forward    It doesn't look like there will be another Prince attending the University of Kentucky in the near future. At least not John Prince, a 6-foot-5 point guard from Cordova, Tenn., who is a cousin of former UK standout Tayshaun Prince, now with the Detroit Pistons. John Prince, a soon-to-be senior at White Station High School, would love to wear a Wildcats uniform.
