  • Even at 258 pounds, Johnson can play middle linebacker    Former all-pro linebacker Levon Kirkland says there's no reason Micah Johnson cannot be a successful middle linebacker at Kentucky even if he is bigger than most players who play that position.
  • Cats haven't improved enough to beat Cards    If Rich Brooks wants to assure that he will still be coaching football at Kentucky next year, all he has to do is lead his team to a victory over Louisville Sunday night at Papa John's Stadium.
  • UK Camp More Relaxed After QB Announcement    Even though they've got a tough game coming up, things are a little more relaxed in the Kentucky football camp now that they know who will lead them. • And the Survey Says …    Wildcats again in nation's top 10 in current graduates ... Kentucky tied for the nation’s fewest recruited seniors ... Kentucky’s cheerleaders featured in the “The Best of College Football” preview in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
  • A LOT ON THE LINE    Pryor's improvement key for UK defense    Observing Kentucky's Myron Pryor sucking wind during his first winter-conditioning session didn't create images of a dominant defensive lineman for the future.
  • NO KNEE-JERK REACTION HERE    Brohm welcomes Cats' pressure despite injury    Kentucky targets highly productive Louisville quarterback. A night of punishing hits and harried throws takes a toll. Kentucky upsets nationally ranked Louisville.
  • Johnson gives UK a lift    Freshman won't start, but he's pushing other linebackers    He hasn't played a down of college football. He won't start when the University of Kentucky opens its season Sunday at the University of Louisville. But if UK's linebackers look better in this season opener than they did in the last, Micah Johnson will deserve some credit.
  • You want some predictions? Here you go    Linebackers are not the only people who have squirmed at the mammoth sight of University of Louisville running back Michael Bush. Add my name to that list.

  • Burton, Bush Put Friendship on Hold for a Day    For as long as Keenan Burton can remember, he and Michael Bush have been friends. Whether they were competing among themselves or on the same team, the two were always around each other.
  • Woodson named Wildcats starter at quarterback    University of Kentucky football coach Rich Brooks is sticking with junior quarterback Andre Woodson to start against Louisville in the Wildcats' season opener Sunday night.
  • Brooks picks Woodson, cites throwing ability    Andre Woodson's overall passing skills and experience managing the Kentucky offense prompted UK coach Rich Brooks to name him the starting quarterback for Sunday's season-opening game at Louisville.
  • Brooks' decision shows a lack of offensive creativity    I believe Curtis Pulley should start at quarterback for the University of Kentucky against the University of Louisville on Sunday. The reason: Quarterbacks who can avoid sacks and make yardage with their legs were effective against the Cardinals last season. That's Pulley. Rich Brooks, the Kentucky coach, believes that Andre' Woodson deserves to start the season opener.
  • With U of L's hype comes pressure    CARDINALS HAVE NO. 13 RANKING, SERIES DOMINANCE TO LIVE UP TO    Louisville players acknowledged feeling pressure going into this season's opener against Kentucky on Sunday. The pressure begins with the seniors trying to become the first class in U of L history to post a 4-0 record against the in-state rival. Then there's the No. 13 pre-season ranking and expectations of further conquests as the season unfolds.
  • Brooks starts season with a victory of sorts    CHOOSING WOODSON IS THE RIGHT MOVE    In its tortured recent past, the unofficial slogan of University of Kentucky football may as well have been Bad Decisions R Us. So perhaps it is an omen that 2006 will be different -- because the UK football brain trust started this year by getting a big one right.
  • Woodson gets nod to start for Cats    Brooks says his junior QB better understands offense    Some things haven't changed. When the University of Kentucky football team opens its season Sunday at the University of Louisville, Andre' Woodson will start at quarterback, just as he did last year. But while the Wildcats will have the same man under center, much will have changed.
  • Cards clearly serious about their business    They're prepared for both UK QBs    Michael Bush walked into the University of Louisville football complex last week and suddenly turned coach Bobby Petrino into a judge from "Project Runway." Bush made the mistake of wearing a blue shirt — not University of Kentucky gear, mind you, just blue. Still, Petrino called out his star running back on the fashion faux pas.
  • Woodson tapped to lead Wildcats    The great quarterback debate at the University of Kentucky is over. At least for now. UK Coach Rich Brooks announced yesterday that junior Andre Woodson would start Sunday's season opener at Louisville ahead of sophomore Curtis Pulley.

Football

  • Woodson to Start Against Louisville    Coach Rich Brooks held his pre-Louisville news conference Monday at the Wildcat Den in Commonwealth Stadium, highlighted by the announcement that junior Andre’ Woodson will be the starting quarterback in the season opener at Louisville.
  • Brohm and Co. to pick on secondary    WILDCAT DEFENSIVE BACKS QUESTION MARK IN OPENER    The inexperienced Kentucky secondary would probably be better served facing a team that ran the triple option or stack-I for its season opener. Maybe even the old Wing-T or veer, something that would allow them a reasonable learning curve and put most of the pressure on the front seven to make plays.
  • Brooks names Woodson starting quarterback against UofL    Andre Woodson's overall passing skills and experience managing the Kentucky offense prompted UK coach Rich Brooks to name him the starting quarterback for Sunday's season-opening game at Louisville.
  • Rivalry: The end of the beginning    Sunday ends tradition of UK-U of L as opener    As a Manual High School graduate, University of Kentucky wide receiver Keenan Burton is keenly aware of the significance of the Louisville-UK football rivalry. And though the series will be slightly altered in the near future, Burton doesn't think it will detract from the game. Next season UK will host U of L after playing Eastern Kentucky and Temple.

  • QB question soon to be answered    BROOKS TO NAME STARTER THIS WEEK    We'll soon know the answer to the most-talked about topic of Kentucky football pre-season. Kentucky Coach Rich Brooks is expected to announce a starting quarterback sometime this week, perhaps as early as his first weekly news conference on Monday. And just about everybody involved -- the coaches, the players, the fans and the media -- will be glad when it finally happens.
  • Take it from Leonard, Cats a seven-time loser    Before ESPN and College GameDay and six-hour pre-game shows and even Beano Cook, there was Leonard Post Toasties. This was the time of radio. This was the time of my youth. This was the time when in the car on the way to another UK football game, I would anxiously wait for the point of the pre-game show in which Percy Peabody introduced the star of "Leonard's Losers," who would open up the "Smart Pill Machine" for a humorous look at the week's projected losers.
  • Status as winner at stake for UK    Through such wrenching heartbreak even Rodin's statue, The Thinker, could feel the pain. Through the Tulane pass interference fiasco in 1980.
  • Cats name Mills, Burton captains    Two players who had to spend most of last season watching Kentucky play after suffering injuries early in the year have been named permanent team captains for this season.
  • Rich's roster is richer    Now if Wildcats can just do their jobs, Brooks is likely to keep his    There was no miraculous turnaround after athletic director Mitch Barnhart announced, in the waning days of UK's 2005 football season, that coach Rich Brooks would be retained for 2006. The Wildcats went 1-1 after the announcement, but the mood around the football program brightened.

  • Rapport may give UK edge with Patterson    RECRUIT CONNECTED TO UK COMMITS TO BOSTON COLLEGE    The word "rapport" came up often last week in conversations about highly regarded prospect Patrick Patterson's basketball future. A lack of rapport between college coach and Patterson caused the player to drop North Carolina not once but twice from his list of college choices. And a strong rapport with Tubby Smith puts Kentucky in solid position, though not necessarily the lead position in this well-chronicled recruiting competition.

Football

  • Better reception this time    BURTON MAY BE ON VERGE OF BIG SEASON AT WR    The folks at Kentucky's football camp know how good Keenan Burton is because they see it in practice every day. The Louisville football team has also seen firsthand how good Burton can be. Burton caught a 31-yard touchdown pass on the Cards as a freshman in 2003 and then had four receptions for 98 yards on the U of L defense last year.
  • Masthay trying to kick his nerves    Freshman season had ups, down    Tim Masthay has grown accustomed to pre-punting nerves. He's used to his heart rate accelerating when it's time to boot the ball away. But this preseason, the University of Kentucky punter felt something new entirely. In the heat of early August, the sophomore was regularly dizzy. The medical staff feared a heart condition.

  • Wildcats Begin Concentrating on Opener    After Wednesday's day off from practice and the beginning of classes, the Kentucky football team returned to the Nutter Training Center practice field Thursday morning.
  • Dixon more than just backup    LITTLE IS GO-TO GUY, BUT UK'S BACKFIELD HAS DEPTH THIS YEAR    It's been widely assumed that Rafael Little will be Kentucky's starting tailback for the Louisville game, and most likely, he will be. After all, it's hard to imagine a player who rushed for more than 1,000 yards and finished fifth in the nation in all-purpose yardage getting benched.
  • And in this corner, uncertainty for the Wildcats' defense    The quarterback position is a battle between two capable leaders. The lines -- offensive and defensive -- are bigger and stronger.

  • UK O-line has been around the block    VERSATILE UNIT HAS EXPERIENCE, NEW ATTITUDE    Michael Aitcheson has seen a lot in his five years on the Kentucky offensive line. He can tell you stories about his freshman year, when he watched as a redshirt while the O-line paved the way for Artose Pinner's 1,414-yard rushing season.
  • Cats not back to calamity status yet    UK'S DEPTH SHOULD COUNTERACT ISSUES    "The List" of five reasons why a player departure and two suspensions does not necessarily mean the return of the Calamity Cats: 1. Having been knocked out by academics, Aaron Miller is a tough loss, but truth is the sophomore offensive tackle did not even play last year for UK.
  • Johnson expects early perfection    Freshman covets starting LB spot    It had not been Micah Johnson's best day. The University of Kentucky football team had just completed its second preseason scrimmage, and Johnson had struggled. Disappointed with his play, the freshman linebacker — the most prized recruit in Rich Brooks' tenure — approached his coach with a message.
  • Brooks' QB choice coming    Woodson, Pulley still in tight battle    When Rich Brooks knows his starting quarterback, he'll share the information. The University of Kentucky football coach said yesterday that he'll evaluate junior Andre' Woodson and sophomore Curtis Pulley in their performances today, tomorrow and in Saturday's closed scrimmage and sometime next week will make an announcement about his starter.

  • Wildcats Have Depth, Talent at Tailback    One of the positions on the Kentucky football this season which immediately invokes excitement among the fan base is at tailback.
  • Cats counting on many happy returns     LITTLE, BURTON ARE BACK AFTER TOP-FIVE SHOWING LAST YEAR, BUT NO STARTERS YET AT PUNTER, KICKER    With Rafael Little and Keenan Burton as return men, it could be party time when opposing teams have to kick to the Wildcats. When it's UK's turn to kick, though, it might be time for Cats fans to close their eyes.
  • Craigman took a long, paternal route to Cats    He had been a basketball player. An assistant nightclub manager. A model. A father. But a football player? J.D. Craigman had never given it much thought. Not since his Pop Warner days, and certainly not since the day — soon after his high school graduation — when Kayla Dayne Craigman was born.

  • UK's Lewis finds his position    The more he struggled to find a position to play, the more Dominic Lewis had to rely on Kentucky teammates for support.
  • Wildcats feel sting of losses before season    WITH NO ROOM FOR ANY SLIP-UPS, DISMISSALS, SUSPENSIONS COSTLY    What I know: There is essentially no margin of error when it comes to winning at football at the University of Kentucky. What I think: Which is why every off-season slip-up -- especially those that take talented players off the roster -- is a form of self-inflicted water torture.
  • Corners are green but deep    BROHM, LOUISVILLE'S RECEIVERS POSE STIFF CHALLENGE EARLY    Kentucky secondary coach Steve Brown would love to tell you he's going to be as cool as a cucumber when the Wildcats take the field against Louisville in less than two weeks.

His sophomore year ended with him earning Sophomore All-America mention by Collegefootballnews.com and honorable mention All-SEC.
  • Cats have two quarterbacks, one plan    Joker Phillips is prepared either way. Although the Kentucky offensive coordinator and coach Rich Brooks have yet to declare a winner in the race between quarterbacks Andre Woodson and Curtis Pulley, the Wildcats will have an offensive scheme in place.
  • Good news: no injuries    Few players not scrimmaging face minor ailments; no word yet on QB    Kentucky completed its second intrasquad scrimmage of fall camp yesterday, and the best news for Rich Brooks was that his team escaped with no major injuries.
  • Logan and Jones suspended for Wildcats' football opener    Two University of Kentucky football players have been suspended for the Wildcats' opening game against Louisville on Sept. 3.
  • UK's Dixon is ready to run again    Back from broken ankle, he's challenging Little    Sometimes, Tony Dixon admits, he breaks out the videotape. But he's getting tired of watching football. Film doesn't stack up to the real thing, and that's been missing for the sophomore, who was sidelined last season after suffering a broken bone in his ankle during preseason practice.
  • Preseason camps at UK and U of L are less than telling    It's fitting that the Sept. 3 football opener between the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky is a night kickoff. Heading into the game, everybody's in the dark. We're only 13 days out. But we're also two weeks removed from seeing the Cardinals (and that without full pads). And we've seen the Wildcats only once since practice began.

  • Better stopping power   D-LINE HOLDING ITS OWN AGAINST WILDCATS' BACKS    Opposing offenses didn't have to draw up a real complex game plan to attack the Kentucky defense last season. It basically went down like this: Line up, hand off, run the ball down their throats.
  • It's a small world for former UK player Miller    YEARS LATER, HE MET COACHES' GREAT-GRANDDAUGHTERS    It had been almost 50 years since that Saturday afternoon in 1958 when Jim Miller walked off the field at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, his college football career at UK ending in celebration with a win over Tennessee.

Sure, he's more than that — a sixth-year senior on the University of Kentucky football team, the projected starter at center and a transfer from the Naval Academy who owns a degree in economics. For now, though, McCutchan is the guy who missed a practice this preseason because he got a piece of chicken stuck in his throat.

  • QB conundrums all over the SEC    KENTUCKY IS NOT THE ONLY TEAM DEBATING    The opening kickoff is just a little more than two weeks away, and hasn't anyone in the Southeastern Conference decided on a starting quarterback?
  • After hard-luck season, healed Cats are now hungry    Many players have something to prove    To one side of Keenan Burton was a wide receiver. To the other was a defensive end. This was last fall, and Burton, the University of Kentucky wide receiver, was nowhere near a football field. "I remember one day sitting in the training room and being like, 'It's crowded in here,' " said Burton, who missed four games with an injured foot. "It was kind of ridiculous."

He's Jacob Tamme, today Kentucky's starting tight end but once upon a time the editor of the student newspaper at Boyle County High School.

  • DVD for infants teaches Wildcat fundamentals     The tagline almost says it all when it describes the Baby Wildcat DVD as a way of "Raising Tomorrow's Kentucky Fan Today." Because, apparently, if your children don't start cheering for the Wildcats before they can crawl, they'll be way behind as fans by the time they're old enough to tailgate.
  • The practice of closing practice    College football coaches limiting access to media and fans    "(Practice) was closed last year except for the first 10 or 15 minutes," Brooks said. "I just didn't see the sense in having anybody in here at this stage of the season snapping a few pictures or looking at a few guys running around and then going out and putting something on the Internet about how terrific this guy looks in practice."

  • Quarterbacks Look Good in Fan Day Scrimmage    The contention for the starting quarterback job was not resolved in the University of Kentucky’s first scrimmage of fall practice, and all for positive reasons.
  • UK Football Fans Day Photo Gallery    The UK football team held the annual Fans Day Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium. The team held an autograph session and fans were invited to stick around and observe and open practice.
  • Time-saving rule will add to decisions    FEWER PLAYS GOOD FOR UK?    There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Case in point: College football. Example A: The 12-game regular season. Example B: The thought of a 12-game regular season in which games last longer than your average congressional filibuster -- and hold just about the same level of viewer interest.
  • UK's Abren tired of talk; defense to be the key    While most of the preseason speculation about the Kentucky football team has centered on whether Andre Woodson or Curtis Pulley will be the starting quarterback, Ricky Abren knows its much more likely that the defense will determine how much success Kentucky has this year.
  • Wildcats show off their newfound depth, speed    Jamil Paris batted down a pass, then got his hand on another. The University of Kentucky's third-string defensive end was everywhere yesterday in the Wildcats' first public scrimmage of the season at Commonwealth Stadium.
  • Hope abounds, as always, for UK football fans    The University of Kentucky held its annual football Fan Day yesterday, passed out free posters, hot dogs and soft drinks. Funny thing, but everyone's cup seemed half full.
  • Second chance thrills freshman    Jamil Paris left a lot of things behind when he left his hometown of Vero Beach, Fla., for Lexington in June. The tough part was separating himself from the two women who raised him: his mother, Chiquita Smith, and grandmother, Tressie Flemming.

A familiar scenario seemed to be unfolding. Then UK Coach Tubby Smith called last Friday to offer Darius Miller a scholarship. So there won't be a replay of (to borrow from The Daily Show) Indecision 2004. That's when UK danced around the decision of whether to offer Mason County's Chris Lofton a scholarship.

  • Cats scratch for spots    Quarterback isn't the only position battle    If you had asked the Kentucky coaching staff to name a standout during the first week of fall camp, you wouldn't have gotten many answers.
  • Scrimmage may to help sift out Cats' starters    Wide receivers among those looking for spots    Steve Johnson has turned heads already in the University of Kentucky's preseason football camp. But even if coaches weren't high on him, and even if they weren't pointing to today's public scrimmage at Commonwealth Stadium as a way for Johnson to continue his climb up the depth chart at receiver, the junior-college transfer would be excited.

Last year, the Kentucky coach saw seemingly every freak injury in the book as player after player went down during the course of the season — torn ACL's, broken feet, broken scapulas, dislocated wrists, dislocated kneecaps.
  • Receiver Brown tears ACL, out for season    University of Kentucky wide receiver Joe Joe Brown has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will miss the coming season, UK coach Rich Brooks said yesterday.

  • Receiving instruction    VETERAN OFFERS AID TO WIDEOUT NEWCOMERS    Keenan Burton went into the summer not knowing for sure who'd be lining up next to him at wide receiver in the fall. But Burton knows this: No matter who fills the remaining receiver slots, the quicker they learn, the easier life will be for him.
  • Earning roster spot isn't easy for Holt    Chad Johnson is Chad Johnson. T.J. Houshmandzadeh is underrated. When not confined to a holding cell, Chris Henry flashes brilliance. Kelley Washington has experience. Antonio Chatman and Tab Perry have return-man skills. Bennie Brazell has world-class speed.
  • Cats' Pryor loosens up    Last season's cramps might have been all in his mind    These days it seems nothing can rattle Myron Pryor. At 6 feet 1 and 300 pounds, the defensive tackle has been perhaps the most buzzed-about player in the University of Kentucky's preseason camp. He squats 700 pounds in the weight room. His coaches rave about his combination of strength and speed. As he sauntered off the practice field earlier this week, the smiling sophomore was the very picture of calm and collected, if not cool.

The 6-foot-3, 245-pound Grinter fell into the "athlete" category that has become so prevalent in college football over the past decade -- a player not set to one specific position yet talented and skilled enough to contribute at several.

U of L athletic director Tom Jurich has been voted into the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame. Coach Bobby Petrino is on all the lists as the Next Hot Thing and just signed a 10-year contract extension.

McClinton, a first-stringer at free safety, suffered a compound dislocation of the pinky finger on his right hand during an interception drill, Brooks said.
  • No ripping, just a lot of observing    The question came not long after I'd taken this job, from a surprising number of people: "So, who's the first person you're going to rip?" Now "rip" is such a harsh word, with its violent connotations. Sports columns don't rip people. People rip people. I merely stand at close range, gawking and pointing.
