  • Bat Cats Pound Eastern Kentucky, 18-9    The Kentucky baseball team snapped a two-game losing skid with an 18-8 win over the Eastern Kentucky Colonels Wednesday night, April 30, at Cliff Hagan Stadium. The Cats and Colonels combined for 35 hits in the game, including a season-high 23 from the Cats, led by a perfect 4-for-4 performance from Caleb Brock and four hits in five at bats from Mike Breyman.
  • Bat Cats fall to Lipscomb    The Bat Cats fell 9-7 to visiting Lipscomb last night. The big blow to the Cats (18-25) was a grand slam by the Bisons' Todd Boucher in the second inning that gave Lipscomb a 7-2 lead.

More than 500 athletes from across the University of Kentucky came out in tuxes and formal dresses to be honored at what UK hopes is the first annual Catspy awards.

The Cats scored the last five runs of the game to cut into Lipscomb's advantage after a six-run second inning secured the lead for the Bisons.

  • UK Athletics Holds Inaugural Catspy's    University of Kentucky Athletics held the inaugural Catspy Awards, a gala event honoring Wildcat student-athletes, Monday night. A spin-off of the popular ESPY's held by ESPN every summer, the Catspy's began with a dinner at Memorial Coliseum followed by the awards presentations at the Singletary Center on the UK campus.

  • This Week in Kentucky Football, April 28 - May 4    Five Kentucky Wildcats have signed free-agent contracts in the National Football League. The free agent signees are in addition to two players were selected in the draft - defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson, who was the No. 4 pick in the first round by the New York Jets, and running back Artose Pinner, taken in the fourth round by the Detroit Lions.
  • QB shuffle working for 'Cats    It's an unorthodox offensive set, so unorthodox that offensive coordinator Ron Hudson uses the word, "queer," as in strange, to define it in his playbook, but it's one that could become more normal to the University of Kentucky football team this season if what happened with it in spring practice is any indication.

The Cats won the first game of the double header at Cliff Hagan Stadium, 8-1, after resuming play that was suspended Friday night due to inclement weather in the Bluegrass.
  • Kentucky Knocks Off Georgia, 8-1    The University of Kentucky baseball team took the first game of a Southeastern Conference series from the Georgia Bulldogs, 8-1, Saturday afternoon at Cliff Hagan Stadium. The Cats and Bulldogs resumed play in the game in the bottom of the third with the Cats on top 1-0.

However, the Bulldogs have not won a conference series so far in 2003.

  • Tickets On Sale For `Catspys'    A limited number of tickets have been made available to the general public for the University of Kentucky's inaugural "Catspy Awards" on April 28, a takeoff of the popular "ESPY Awards" produced by ESPN each summer.
  • Big Blue Caravan Scheduled    Plans for the first "Big Blue Caravan" were announced Monday by University of Kentucky Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart. In May and June, the caravan, which features Kentucky's head coaches including Tubby Smith, Rich Brooks and Mickie DeMoss, as well as top administrators, will visit seven cities in the region.

Abukar, who asked for and received his release from his letter of intent from new Georgia coach Dennis Felton, is an outstanding prospect from the 2003 class.   • Kentucky Signs Tubby Smith to an Eight-Year Contract    University of Kentucky head men's basketball coach Orlando "Tubby" Smith has signed a new eight-year contract running through the year 2011, that would be worth at least 2.5 million dollars per year, which could make Smith the highest paid collegiate men's basketball coach in the nation. The contract replaces his previous agreement, which ran through the 2007 season.

Wade, who finished nine innings for the seventh time in his career and the second this season, gave up just five hits and struck out six batters in his second win of the season

  • C-minus for Barnhart    Performance grade so far for University of Kentucky director of athletics? From one tax payer, Mitch Barnhart gets a C-minus. Barnhart fumbled the football coach hiring process, showed no creativity hiring a women's basketball coach, threw more money at Tubby Smith, announced a ticket price hike for the coming football season. And, UK's athletic budget of $42 million this year will increase to $45 million next.
  • Estill Enters NBA Draft    Marquis Estill has filed to enter the National Basketball Association's June Draft and will not return to Kentucky next season, the University of Kentucky senior announced today. Estill had entered UK as a partial qualifier and according to NCAA rules, sat out his freshman season. He played three years at Kentucky and could have earned a fourth year of eligibility had he graduated by next fall.
  • 6-10 forward puts U of L, UK on his nine-school list    Mohamed Abukar, a highly sought 6-foot-10 forward from San Diego, has notified nine schools of his interest, and the universities of Kentucky and Louisville are among them.

  • UK Baseball Loses at Western Kentucky, 3-2    The Kentucky baseball team managed only two runs on six hits, as it fell to Western Kentucky, 3-2, on Wednesday, April 16, in Bowling Green. The Cats failed to score after the second inning and left seven runners on base in the game en route to losing their first non-conference game in seven tries.

  • Kentucky Baseball to Battle Western Kentucky on Wednesday    The Kentucky baseball team will travel to Bowling Green, Ky., on Wednesday, April 16, for a mid-week non-conference matchup with the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky. The contest between the intrastate rivals is set to begin with first pitch at 7 p.m. EST from Nick Denes Field.

  • UK's Estill will test draft waters    RETURN TO SCHOOL IS UNLIKELY    Kentucky center Marquis Estill formally will place his name in the NBA Draft this week. Although he could play again for UK next season, his return is not expected.
  • Kentucky courts big men    While one big-man recruit for the University of Kentucky basketball team appears to be out of the picture at least two others remain in it and another has come back into it.  
    Center Darryl Watkins of Paterson (N.J.) Catholic High School has apparently crossed UK off his list after reportedly canceling a visit this month and pulling out of the Derby Festival Classic on April 26.

  • Kentucky Announces 2003 Volleyball Schedule    University of Kentucky volleyball coach Jona Braden has announced the 2003 schedule, which features three pre-conference tournaments and trips to 11 different states. The schedule features four teams that made the 2002 NCAA Tournament, including two Final Four squads, Florida and Hawaii.

  • Patience serves UK's Boyd well as backup    Patience is a word that Shane Boyd may understand better than any other University of Kentucky football player.
  • Lorenzen's job not locked up    Jared Lorenzen is No. 6 on cbssportsline.com's Heisman Trophy candidate list for the 2003 season, but he still hasn't wrapped up the starting spot at quarterback for the University of Kentucky.

  • Kentucky Baseball Falls To Alabama, 4-1    The Kentucky baseball team could muster virtually no offense against Alabama starter Brent Carter, as the Tide beat the Cats, 4-1, on Sunday, April 13. The win gave Alabama the series after the teams split the first two games of the weekend set.

  • Cats' defense going through changes    The University of Kentucky's defense, which consistently has placed near the bottom of the Southeastern Conference, is undergoing a makeover that would make Elizabeth Taylor proud.
  • Cats' growth stunted so far    It's spring. It's a time for new beginnings and new growth.    
    Those spring things have a whole new meaning for Kentucky football players, halfway through their first spring with new coach Rich Brooks. 
  • Brooks fearless with scrimmages    "Let's just get out of it without getting anybody hurt."   That was the opinion voiced frequently by former Kentucky coach Guy Morriss, as fear of injury usually caused him to limit the team's pre-season scrimmages to between 50-80 plays. 
  • Seitze on watch list for Rimington Trophy    Senior center Nick Seitze has been named to the preseason watch list for the Dave Rimington Trophy, presented annually to the nation's best college football center.
  • Special teams inproving    After being extremely critical of the entire punt team Saturday -- from snaps to kicks -- Brooks was more pleased with that unit's performance Monday and Wednesday.  
  • Brady's star on the rise with Wildcats coaches    While redshirting as a freshman on the University of Kentucky football team last season and thus playing on the scout team Joe Brady didn't get much a of a chance to learn his own offense, but he did get a chance to butt heads everyday with one of the nation's best defensive lineman.  
  • Several seniors-to-be committing early    While most college football programs are in the midst of spring practice, that hasn't stopped numerous seniors-to-be from orally committing already.

  • Georgia signee might be interested in Cats    The University of Kentucky could enter the picture with Mohamed Abukar, a 6-foot-10 forward from San Diego who signed with Georgia last fall. He is seeking his release from the Bulldogs and might consider UK.
  • Camara and Estill draft notes    Imagine if you were one of the players at the Portsmouth Invitational, or a player who assumed he'll get drafted and in turn chose to skip the camp. Reality won't hit for three months when you're passed up in the first round. 
  • Big Blue fans best but also toughest    Appreciative fans routinely chanted "Tub-bee, Tub-bee" as Kentucky's winning streak built toward historic numbers. To which a question came to mind: Where was this inspiring tribute when UK Coach Tubby Smith could have used it?

  • Kentucky Rides Strong Arms To Pick Up 5-3 Win Over Alabama    Kentucky rode the arms of starter Heath Castle and relievers Kalen Gibson and Seth Stanley to pick up a 5-3 victory over the homestanding Alabama Crimson Tide. Castle threw 6 2/3 innings, allowing just three runs on six hits. Gibson came on to hold the Tide scoreless in 1 1/3 innings of one-hit work and Stanley slammed the door in the ninth to earn his first career save.

  • Kentucky Football Scrimmage    The Kentucky football team held a two-hour, 20-minute practice Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium, capped by a 90-minute scrimmage. The practice marked the halfway point of the 2003 spring football season.

  • Cats look to lock up Tubby with extension    University of Kentucky men's basketball coach Tubby Smith is reviewing a contract extension that includes a raise and enhanced incentives.
  • UK, UC recruiting same duo    The University of Kentucky and University of Cincinnati basketball teams may not be facing each other on the basketball court in the near future, but they're in the process of doing battle off the court for two recruits.

  • Kentucky Loses Tough One At Alabama, 8-7    With the game knotted at 7-7, Alabama's Travis Garner doubled off the wall in right field to score Zac Welch and give Bama an 8-7 lead. Kentucky got runners to first and second in the top of the ninth, but failed to score. Sloppy defense cost the Cats, as they committed five errors and allowed four unearned runs for the Crimson Tide.
  • Friday's Baseball Game With Alabama Live on 1300AM    Kentucky's baseball game with Alabama, tonight, Friday, April 11, can be heard live on 1300 AM, WLXG. The game originally scheduled to be broadcast on a delayed basis, has now been changed to a live broadcast.
